Sarcophaga agnata Rondani, 1861 View in CoL View at ENA

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861g: 378 (key), 385 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Etruria [ Etruria (= Tuscany, Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♂♂ (one of them is surely the holotype, but is not labeled as such) ( MZUF: Box 19) with the following labels: 1 ♂ (terminalia glued to a cardboard stage pinned below specimen), Sarcophaga Mgn / agnata Piccioli , ♂ / 997 / lectotype [incorrectly designated] Sarcophaga agnata Rond. , ♂, T. Pape det., 1986 / Helicophagella agnata (Rnd.) T. Pape det., 1986; 2 ♂♂, Sarcophaga Mgn / agnata Piccioli , ♂ / 997 / paralectotype [incorrectly designated] .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Helicophagella agnata ( Verves 1986: 137, Povolný & Verves 1997: 152); valid species, as Sarcophaga (Helicophagella) agnata View in CoL ( Pape 1988: 5, 1996: 318, Pape et al. 1995: 13; Krčmar et al. 2019: 123).

REMARKS: Rondani (1861g: 385) described Sarcophaga agnata from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and giving only a single measurement of length, from material sent to him by F.M. Piccioli, to whom he attributed the species name. In his redescription Rondani (1862d: 102) specified having a single male: “ unicum marem collectionis meae [only one male in my collection]”. Pape (1988: 5) incorrectly designated a lectotype male and two paralectotype males in the MZUF. There are three males in the MZUF without any label indicating their type status. We are unable to single out the male upon which Rondani based his description. We leave the recognition of the holotype to a future specialist.
