Type:— Not typified here. [Originally collected by Perrier de la Bâthie, s.n., in June 1912, at an altitude of about 1700 meters, on quartzites located between Ambalomainty and Ihemo, in the province of Ambositra , Madagascar.]
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
[English: “This species, which is dedicated to Prof. E. Heckel, the learned director of the Colonial Institute of Marseille, was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in June 1912, at an altitude of about 1700 meters, on quartzites located between Ambalomainty and Ihemo, in the province of Ambositra. It belongs to group 2 proposed by Mr. Raymond Hamet and is similar to K. integrifolia Baker , from which it is easily distinguished […].”
No material that qualifies as orginal could be located (Dr Florian Jabbour pers. comm.). No new material that fits reasonably well with the description and locality given in the protologue is available for neotypification.
9. Kalanchoe bitteri Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 120) is widely treated as a synonym of K. integrifolia . Based on material collected in June 1912. Collector of the material not explicitly stated; the material was presumably collected by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— Not typified here. [Presumably originally collected by Perrier de la Bâthie, s.n., in June 1912, at an altitude of about 1700 meters, on quartzites located between Ambalomainty and lhemo, in the province of Ambositra, Madagascar.]
Homotypic synonym:— K. integrifolia var. bitteri (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 183).
[English: “This species, which is dedicated to Dr Bitter, the learned director of the Bremen Botanical Garden, was collected, in June 1912, at an altitude of about 1700 meters, on the quartzites located between Ambalomainty and Ihemo, in the Province of Ambositra. It belongs to group 2 proposed by Mr Raymond-Hamet and is similar to Kalanchoe integrifolia Baker and K. heckelii Raym. -Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie, but is easily distinguished from them.”]
No material that qualifies as orginal could be located (Dr Florian Jabbour pers. comm.). No new material that fits reasonably well with the description and locality given in the protologue is available for neotypification.

Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum daigremontianum (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Berger (1930: 412).
Notes:— Smith & Shtein (2021a: 244–245) comprehensively discussed the lecto- and epitypification of the name K. daigremontiana .
11. Kalanchoe rosei Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 132) . Based on material collected in July 1910 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR: South-central Madagascar , on damp and wooded rocks, in schists and on Permian sandstones in the torrent gorges, near the sources of the Imaloto River and around Ranahia, July 1910, J. M. [ H.] A. Perrier de la Bâthie 11825 (lectotype Herb. P P00444019 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00444019]; isolectotype Herb US US 00603536!) , the former referred to as “Holo-” by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 98), corrected to lectotype by Shtein et al. (2021b: 262).
Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum rosei (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Berger (1930: 411).
Notes:—Shtein et al. (2021a, 2021b) and Shtein & Smith (2021a) clarified the application of the name K. rosei , and Smith & Figueiredo (2018b: 1039, 2019a) discussed aspects of the nomenclature applicable to K. rosei , especially with reference to the name K. bouvierii .
12. Kalanchoe juelii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 135) is the basionym of K. beauverdii var. juelii (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Smith & Figueiredo (2019c: 119). Based on material collected in June 1910. Collector of the material not explicitly stated; presumably collected by Perrier de la Bâthie

[image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00431147]), lectotype designated by Smith & Figueiredo (2019c: 119) .
Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum juelii (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Berger (1930: 411).
13. Kalanchoe boisii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 149) . Based on material collected in July 1911 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR: [Western] Madagascar. Melaky Region , on the limestone of Tsingy de Bemaraha, Manambolo River, July 1911, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11808 (lectotype Herb. P P00374116 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/ mnhn/p/p00374116]), here corrected to lectotype .
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
[English: “This species, which is dedicated to Mr Bois, assistant at the National Museum of Natural History and secretary of the National Horticultural Society, was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in July 1911, on the limestone rocks of Tringy du Bemarula [Bemaraha] (Manambolo).”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 186) state that the “holo-” of the name K. boisii , [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11808, is held in Herb. P, while Descoings (2003: 149) regarded “ Perrier 11808” as “ T ” only.
Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 152) only stated that the species had been collected by Perrier de la Bâthie in July 1911 without citing (an) actual specimen(s). The name K. boisii therefore does not have a holotype. However, we regard the specimen [ J. M.] H.[ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11808 as original material as it was clearly available to Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914); the specimen was collected three years earlier, in 1911. We here correct “ holotype ” to lectotype as, additionally, there is no evidence that [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11808 is the “ one specimen ” ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 9.1) indicated or used by Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 152) when describing K. boisii .
14. Kalanchoe gentyi Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 157) is a synonym of K. synsepala Baker (1882: 110) . Based on material collected in June 1912 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR. Fianarantsoa Province: On the dry quartzites of a summit located near the confluence of the Ivato and the Mainia , 1400 m above sea level, June 1912, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11809 (lectotype Herb. P P00443932 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443932]), lectotype designated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 178) .
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
[English: “This plant, which is dedicated to Mr Paul- André Genty, the learned director of the Botanical Garden of Dijon, was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in June 1912, at an altitude of about 1400 meters, on dry quartzites from a peak located near the confluence of the Ivato and the Mainia [Rivers].”]
The name K. gentyi does not have a holotype as Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 157) did not cite any specimens; they only stated that the plant was collected by Perrier de la Bâthie in June 1912. We regard the specimen [ J. M.] H.[ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11809 as original material associated with the name K. gentyi as it was clearly available to Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914); the specimen was collected two years earlier, in 1912. Also, there is no evidence that [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11809 is the “ one specimen ” ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 9.1) indicated or used by Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 157) when describing K. gentyi , and therefore it is treated as the lectotype of the name (see next paragraph).
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 178) cite “[ J. M. H. A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11809, juin 1912 ” as “ type ” as well as with reference to “Berger, Crassulaceae : 406, 1930, Lecto- [Herb.] P ”. We regard this as an effective lectotypification as, inter alia, Turland et al. (2018:Articles 9.22 and 9.23) were complied with. Eight years later, Descoings (2003: 177) did not cite a type for the name K. gentyi .
15. Kalanchoe viguieri Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 187) , i.e., K. viguieri var. viguieri , was based on material collected in June 1910 and, later, in August 1910, by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR. Toliara Province: On the limestone rocks of the Mahafaly plateau, June 1910, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11818 (lectotype Herb. P P00431371 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00431371]), stated to be the “Holo-” by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164), here corrected to lectotype .
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
Designation not validly published:—‘ Kalanchoe viguieri var. genuina ’, nom. inval. ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 24.3), i.e., K. viguieri var. viguieri . Although Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164) list “Perrier 11820, grès du Mangoky, août 1910, P ” as the “ Type ” of ‘ Kalanchoe viguieri var. genuina ’, a designation that was not validly published does not have a type, as types are for names, which, by definition had to have been validly published ( Turland et al. 2018: Articles 6.3 and 7.1, and Glossary).
[English: “This variety [i.e., K. viguieri var. viguieri ] was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in June 1910, on the limestone rocks of the Mahafaly plateau, and in August 1910 on the dry and wooded sandstones of Mongoky.”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164) state that the “Holo-” of the name K. viguieri , [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11818, is held in Herb. P, while Descoings (2003: 180) regarded “ Perrier 11818 ” as “ T ” only. Material that was collected on the dry and wooded sandstones of Mongoky in August 1910, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11819 (Herb. P P 00431370! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00431370]), is not the “ Type ” of ‘ K. viguieri var. genuina ’, nom. inval. as stated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164), as a designation does not have a type (see discussion above). Furthermore, Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 190) stated that material collected in both June 1910 and, later, in August 1910, by Perrier de la Bâthie applies to ‘ Kalanchoe viguieri var. genuina ’, nom. inval.
Note that Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164), perhaps in error, cited the material from Mongoky as “ Perrier 118 20 ”, whereas “ Perrier 118 19 ” should have been cited; “ Perrier 118 20 ” is the original material of K. viguieri var. latisepala , instead (see 16, below).
Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 187) only stated that the autonymic variety of K. viguieri had been collected by Perrier de la Bâthie in two distinct gatherings and localities without citing actual specimens. The name K. viguieri therefore does not have a holotype. Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 164) effectively typified the name K. viguieri , but we here correct their use of the term “Holo-[type]” to lectotype for [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11818 ( P P 00431371), material held at Herb. P.
16. Kalanchoe viguieri var. latisepala Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 190) is widely treated as a synonym of K. viguieri . Based on material collected in July 1910 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR. Toliara Province: On wooded limestone rockeries, dry sandstones and woodlands around Ampanihy, Menarandra River , June 1910, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11820 (lectotype Herb. P P00431369 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn. fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00431369]), stated to be the “holo-” by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 166), here corrected to lectotype .
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
[English: “This variety was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in July 1910, on wooded limestone rockeries and on dry and wooded sandstones around Ampanihy (Menerandra).”]
Although Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 166) refer to “Perrier de la Bâthie 11820” as the “holo-” of Kalanchoe viguieri var. latisepala , the name does not have a holotype as Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 190) did not explicitly cite any specimens. Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 166) effectively typified the name K. viguieri var. latisepala , but we here correct their use of the term “holo-[type]” to lectotype for [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11820 held at Herb. P.
Note that most online databases do not reference K. viguieri var. latisepala .
17. Kalanchoe bouvetii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 192) . Collector of the material not explicitly stated; the material was collected in July 1899, presumably by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR. Betsiboka Region : On the shaded granite rocks by the Mahazoma River, Menavava, July 1899, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 937 (lectotype Herb. P P00374117 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374117]), second-step lectotype, here designated .
Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum bouvetii (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Berger (1930: 411).
[English: “This species, which is dedicated to Mr Bouvet, the learned director of the Botanical Garden of Angers [jardin des plantes d’Angers], was collected in July 1899, on the granite and shaded rocks of the banks of the Mazoma River, a right tributary of the Menavava [River]; in July 1902 on the humid and shaded limestone rocks of the Masieposa gorges, near Kay; finally, in June 1911, in the red sands of Antanimona, in the Betsiboka basin.”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 185) state that the “Holo-” of the name K. bouvetii , [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 937, is held in Herb. P, while Descoings (2003: 149) regarded “ Perrier 937 ” as “ T ” only.
Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 195) only stated that the species had been collected by Perrier de la Bâthie in three distinct gatherings and from three different localities, spanning a 12-year period, without citing actual specimens. The name K. bouvetii therefore does not have a holotype. Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 185) effectively typified the name K. bouvetii , but we here correct their use of the term “Holo-[type]” to lectotype for [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 937 held at Herb. P.
Three specimens matching the earliest of the three gatherings mentioned by Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 195) are catalogued with the collector’s number [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 937 in Herb. P. In a second-step lectotypification, under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 9.17), we here narrow down the lectotypification of Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 185) to P P 00374117, the first of three [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 937 specimens received at Herb. P.
18. Kalanchoe jongmansii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 195) . Based on material collected in September 1911 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR: Massif d’Andringitra , 1600 m above sea level, September 1911, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11811 (lectotype Herb. P P00374229 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374229]), lectotype designated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 74) .
Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum jongmansii (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Govaerts (1996: 13).
Notes:—When publishing the name K. jongmansii, Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 198) inter alia stated: “Cette espèce qui est dédiée à M. le Dr W. Jongmans, l’aimable et savant conservateur du Musée Royal Botanique de Leiden, a été récoltée par M. Perrier de la Bâthie en septembre 1911, à une altitude d’environ 1600 mètres sur les rocailles granitiques du massif d’Andrengitsa.” [English: “This species which is dedicated to Dr. W. Jongmans, the kind and learned curator of the Royal Botanical Museum of Leiden, was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie in September 1911, at an altitude of about 1600 m on granite rocks of the Andrengitsa Massif.”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 74) lectotypified the name K. jongmansii on Perrier de la Bâthie 11811, which is held in Herb. P. Descoings (2003: 159) regarded “ Perrier 11811” as “ T ” only.
19. Kalanchoe bergeri Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 199) . Based on material collected in September 1911 by Perrier de la Bâthie

P P00374113 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn. fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374113]), lectotype designated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 72) .
Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum bergeri (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Govaerts (1996: 13).
Notes:—When publishing the name K. bergeri, Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1914: 202) inter alia stated: “Cette espèce qui est dédiée à M. le Dr Alwin Berger, le savant conservateur du Jardin Hambury, a été récoltée par M. Perrier de la Bâthie, en septembre 1911, à une altitude d’environ 2.200 mètres, parmi les mousses qui recouvrent les gneiss secs ou humides du massif d’Andringitra.” [English: “This species, which is dedicated to Dr Alwin Berger, the learned conservator of the Hambury [sic, “Hanbury”] Garden [on the Italian Riviera], was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in September 1911, at an altitude of about 2200 m, among the mosses that cover the wet or dry gneisses of the Andringitra Massif.”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 72) lectotypified the name K. bergeri on Perrier de la Bâthie 10091, which is held in Herb. P. Descoings (2003: 148) regarded “ Perrier 10091” as “ T ” only.
20. Kalanchoe chapototii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915: 64) . Based on material collected in July 1903 and again in October 1905 by Perrier de la Bâthie
Type:— MADAGASCAR. Mahajanga Province: On the limestone and wooded rocks of Namoroka, Ambongo , July 1908, [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 1451 (lectotype Herb. P P00374129 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/ p00374129]), designated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 186), here corrected to lectotype .
Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
[English: “This species, which is dedicated to Dr Chapotot, chief physician of Hospital 189 in Lyon, was collected by Mr Perrier de la Bâthie, in July 1903 and October 1905, on limestone and wooded rocks at Namoroka (Ambongo).”]
Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 186) state that the “holo-” of the name K. chapototii , [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 1451, is held in Herb. P, while Descoings (2003: 151) regarded “ Perrier 1451” as “ T ” only.
Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915: 64) only stated that the species had been collected by Perrier de la Bâthie in July 1903 and again in October 1905 without citing actual specimens. The name K. chapototii therefore does not have a holotype. However, we regard the specimen [ J. M.] H.[ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 1451 as original material under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 9.4) as it was clearly available to Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915); the specimen was collected seven years earlier, in 1908. Note though that this specimen, [ J. M.] H.[ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 1451, was not mentioned in the protologue of the name K. chapototii . We here correct “ holotype ” to lectotype as it is clear that [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 1451 was not the “ one specimen ” ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 9.1) used by Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915: 64–68) when describing K. chapototii .

Homotypic synonyms:—None recorded.
Notes:—The name K. pinnata var. brevicalyx thus far has been omitted from online and other nomenclatural databases. In the protologue of the name K. pinnata var. brevicalyx , the date on which Perrier de la Bâthie originally collected the material described was not provided. Thus far the name K. pinnata var. brevicalyx has not been included in online databases.
25. Kalanchoe mortagei Raym. -Hamet & H.Perrier in Raymond-Hamet (1948: 120). Based on material collected by Mr Mortage, with the specimen having been sent to Raymond-Hamet in 1933
Type:— MADAGASCAR: Cultivated in Jardin Botanique de Tananarive , from northern Madagascar, Camp d’Ambre, 800 m above sea level, received at Herb. P in 1932–1933, H.[ J. M. H. A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 19286 (lectotype Herb. P P00443533 ! [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443533]; isolectotypes Herb. P P00443528 to P00443532 [Images available online]), ‘holotype’ according to Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: l22), here corrected to lectotype and narrowed down to a single specimen in a second-step lectotypification, here designated .
Homotypic synonyms:— Bryophyllum mortagei (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Wickens (1982: 672). Kalanchoe poincarei var. mortagei (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Boiteau in Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 122). Note that in this paper we preferentially treat K. poincarei as K. × poincarei pro sp. (see Smith 2021: 203 for a full discussion of the nomenclatural novelties published in Kalanchoe in Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau 1995).
” (Raymond-Hamet 1948: 118). [English: “With his usual kindness, Mr Perrier de la Bâthie sent me, in 1933, a dried specimen of a Kalanchoe that Mr Mortage had collected on the basalt rocks of Camp d’Ambre, at an altitude of about 800 m. ”] However, no specimens matching this information and “1933” only as collecting date could be located at Herb. P (Dr Florian Jabbour pers. comm.). The name K. mortagei therefore does not have a holotype, even though Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 122) incorrectly state that the “holo-” of the name K. mortagei is [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 19286. Note that Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 122) treated K. mortagei as a variety of K. poincarei , as K. poincarei var. mortagei (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier in Raymond-Hamet 1948: 120) Boiteau in Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 122). Eight years later Descoings (2003: 170) regarded K. poincarei var. mortagei as a synonym of K. poincarei without citing type or any other material.
We located the Perrier de la Bâthie material cited by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 122) and concluded that it qualifies as original in the sense of Turland et al. (2018: Art. 9.4). Note that the name of the collector of the material, Mr Mortage, does not appear on labels affixed to the specimens. Rather, on the labels attached to the [ J. M.] H. [ A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 19286 specimens it is indicated that this material was cultivated in Tananarive in the Jardin Botanique de Tananarive [now the Botanical and Zoological Garden of Tsimbazaza or Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza] before it was preserved. This material did, however, originate from Camp d’Ambre, at an altitude of 800 m above sea level (see for example Herb. P P 00443531 [Image available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/ mnhn/p/p00443531]), while other specimens are labelled as having been received [from Madagascar by Herb. P] during 1932–1933, therefore matching what was stated in the protologue of the name K. mortagei in Raymond-Hamet (1948: 118). This cultivated material of K. mortagei was eventually preserved and labelled with the collector’s number Perrier de la Bâthie 19286. The material was mounted across six specimens held at Herb. P, perhaps due to the large size of the plants’ leaves and inflorescence. These include P P 00443528 to P P 00443533. However, the six specimens do not have a single collecting label in common and we interpret them as duplicates under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 8.3). In a second-step lectotypification we here designate one of them, P P 00443533 (Perrier de la Bâthie 19286), as lectotype. This specimen consists of both vegetative and fertile material.
As discussed in detail in Shtein & Smith (2021b: 114–115), the inclusion of K. mortagei in K. × poincarei resulted from a longstanding confusion between what constitutes the type of the name K. × poincarei (see 7, above) and the type of the name K. gastonis-bonnieri , a distantly related species (see 2, above, and Smith et al. 2020: 99–101). While K. × poincarei represents a putative nothospecies [most likely either Kalanchoe beauverdii Hamet (1907: 887) × K. daigremontiana , or K. beauverdii × K. rosei ,] of scrambling habit known from a single locality in southern Madagascar (Shtein & Smith 2021b: 114–115), both K. mortagei and K. gastonis-bonnieri are known from several localities in northern Madagascar, and are of low growing, robust, pseudo-rosulate habit. The source of this confusion is perhaps the result of mislabeled illustrations, as well as living material in cultivation at “Les Cèdres” that were originally identified based on Hamet’s unpublished and undated notes, “Clef des Crassulacées malgaches”, where the name “ K. poincarei ” was erroneously applied to a relative or form of K. gastonis-bonnieri from Bemarivo in northern Madagascar ( Descoings 2005: 8–9). Other works, such as Jacobsen (1977: 288, 1986: 624), Boiteau & Allorge Boiteau (1995: 120–122), and Descoings (2003: 169–170) followed this erroneous view, while Rauh (1995: 14) and Descoings (2005: 6) correctly identified K. × poincarei as not belonging to the K. gastonis-bonnieri cluster of species.
