Distribution and habitat. Cercosaura schreibersii is widespread in the central open vegetation areas of South America, occurring in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ). In Brazil, it is known from the states of Tocantins, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and in the Distrito Federal. In Amazonia it occurs in enclaves of open vegetation in southern Rondônia and northwestern Mato Grosso, in Brazil. Cercosaura schreibersii is terrestrial and diurnal, inhabits semideciduous forests, dense cerrado, and open grassfields, where it is mainly found on the ground (Vitt 1991; Vaz-Silva et al. 2007; Marques et al. 2009; Nogueira et al. 2009; Silva et al. 2009; Smith et al. 2011).
