Thymus kirgisorum Dubjansky View in CoL in Fedchenko & Fedchenko (1913: 128).

Lectotype (designated by Klokov & Shostenko 1938: 142):— RUSSIA. Ural region : Temirsky district. ВоЗвыШенность между р. Эмба и балкой Астау- Салды [An elevation between the Emba River and Astau-Saldy gully], 18 June 1904, Dubjansky s.n. ( LE barcode

LE 00050773 [digital image!]). = Thymus eltonicus Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko (1932 “1931”: Russian description: 542, Latin description: 543). ≡ Thymus eltonicus var. eltonicus sensu Knyasev (2015: 127) . Lectotype (designated here):— RUSSIA. Окр. Сарепты [Outskirts of Sarepta], s.d., Becker s.n., ut “? Thymus mugodzaricus Klok. et

Des.-Shost.” (CWU0054223!).

Notes: —Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko (1932 “1931”), when describing Th. eltonicus , cited six gatherings (syntypes). Our efforts to find these syntypes yielded nine herbarium specimens stored at BP, CWU, LE, W and WU, wich are in agreement with species diagnosis and other information from the protologue and/or contain original notes of Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko (see below). Specifically, the specimens BP s.n.!, CWU0054223!, LE 00018240 [digital image!], W 1889-40592!, and WU s.n.! correspond to the first syntype cited in the protologue. According to Art. 9.4(с) of the ICN, all these specimens belong to the original material even though some of them were probably not seen by Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko at all (BP s.n., W 1889-40592, and WU s.n.) or at the time of species description (CWU0054223, notae criticae of Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko with determination “ Thymus eltonicus Klok. et Shost. ” dated 1937). Besides the above undated specimens collected by Becker in Sarepta town, we found one additional identically labelled specimen at LE (LE barcode LE 00018236 [digital image!]), which, however, was identified as “ Thymus kirgisorum Dub. ” by Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko at that time and thus cannot be regarded as the original material of Th. eltonicus . We therefore designate here the specimen CWU0054223 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ), which is a part of the original material, as the new lectotype of Th. eltonicus substituting the lost one (see the discussion above).

Other original material examined (syntypes): — RUSSIA. Sarepta, s.d., Becker s.n., ut “ Thymus odoratissimus latifolius ” ( BP s.n.!, LE barcode LE 00018240 [digital image!], W 1889-40592!). RUSSIA. Sarepta, June [s.a.], Becker s.n., ut “ Thymus odoratissimus Mill. var. latifolius ” ( WU s.n.!). RUSSIA. Эльтонcкий поселок [Elton settlement], 05 July 1910, Andreyev s.n. ( LE barcode LE 00018241 [digital image!]). RUSSIA. Ок.[рестности] Эльтонcкого поселка. В балке, почва глинистаЯ [Outskirts of Elton settlement. In a gully, clayey soil], 18 July 1910, Dubjansky s.n. ( LE barcode LE 00018242 [digital image!]). RUSSIA. Эльтон, СорочьЯ балка [Elton, Sorochya Balka], 21 June 1910, Andreyev s.n. ( LE barcode LE 00018233 [digital image!]). RUSSIA. Сл.[обода] Владимировка на Волге. Балка Джилга [Vladimirovka settlement on the Volga River. Dzhylga gully], 16 June 1909, Dubjansky s.n. ( LE barcode LE 00018239 [digital image!; V.N. —The protologue indicates the year of collection as “1910”, which is most likely a typographical error since the rest information it provides is identical to that in the specimen label]).

= Thymus kirgisorum Dubjansky var. creticola Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko (1932 “1931”: 541) ≡ Thymus kirgisorum subsp. creticola (Klokov & Des.-Shost.) Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko (1938: 142) ≡ Thymus creticola (Klokov & Des.-Shost.) Stankov in Stankov & Taliev (1949: 850). Lectotype (designated here):— RUSSIA. Saratov province: Tsaritsyn district. с. Каменный Брод, меловые горы у села [Kamennyi Brod village, chalky hills near the village], 15 June 1921, Kazakevich s.n., ut “ Thymus cimicinus Blum. ” ( CWU 0054231!, isolectotype

W-Ronniger 2015-02293!).

Notes: —The original material of Th. kirgisorum var. creticola includes, according to the protologue, five herbarium gatherings (syntypes) (Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko 1932 “1931”), all of which were found at herbarium CWU ( CWU 0054227!, CWU 0054228!, CWU 0054229!, CWU 0054230!, CWU 0054231!, see the list below). In addition, we found one specimen at herbarium W:— RUSSIA. Saratov province: Tsaritsyn district. Kamenny Brod, Kreide Gebirge am Dorf, 15 June 1921, Kazakevich s.n. (W-Ronniger 2015-02293!). This latter specimen contains original determination by M. Klokov & N. Desjatova-Shostenko and is most likely a duplicate of the specimen CWU 0054231, as suggested by its printed original label “Гербарій Українського інституту ботаніки (Харківська філіЯ). Herbarium Instituti Botanici (pars Charkoviensis)” with a text handwritten in German by N. Desjatova-Shostenko and being identical to the Russian text on the specimen CWU 0054231. It seems probable that the specimen W-Ronniger 2015- 02293, being a part of original material, was sent by M. Klokov & N. Desjatova-Shostenko to K. Ronniger, who was a leading monographer of Thymus at that time, for his own work. All the above specimens of Th. kirgisorum var. creticola comprising the original material are generally in agreement with the diagnosis of this variety provided in the protologue (Klokov & Desjatova-Shostenko 1932 “1931”). Of these, the specimen CWU 0054231 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ) is designated here as a lectotype, and its (presumably) duplicate specimen W-Ronniger 2015-02293 is considered to be an isolectotype according to Art. 9.4(d) [footnote] of the ICN.

Other original material examined (syntypes): — RUSSIA. Saratov province: хут.[ор] Буров [Burov hamlet], 12 July 1903, Taliev s.n., ut “ Thymus serpyllum ” ( CWU 0054227!). RUSSIA. Saratov province: Tsaritsyn district. с. Чухонастовка, меловые обнажениЯ к Зап.[аду] от с.[ела] у дороги в Таловку [Chukhonastovka village, chalky outcrops to the west near the road to Talovka village], 10 July 1920, Vilensky s.n. ut “ Thymus odoratissimus MB. ” ( CWU 0054228!). RUSSIA. Saratov province: Tsaritsyn district. с. Захаровка, меловые горы [Zakharovka village, chalky hills], 23 June 1921, Kazakevich s.n., ut “ Thymus cimicinus Blum. ” ( CWU 0054229!). RUSSIA. Saratov province: Tsaritsyn district. хут.[ор] Щепкин, “Меловый Шпиль” к востоку от села [Shchepkin hamlet, “Chalky Peak” to the east], 11 June 1921, Kazakevich s.n., ut “ Thymus cimicinus Blum. ” ( CWU 0054230!).
