Note on Psidium hians

Psidium hians Martius ex De Candolle (1828: 234) . Type:— BRAZIL, Martius s.n. (holotype M image!).

P. nutans O. Berg (1857: 394) , syn. nov. Type :— BRAZIL, Gardner 2598 (holotype G image!; isotypes BM image!, OXF image!, P image!). Figure 3.

Psidium hians and P. pubescens Martius ex De Candolle were described and published together by de Candolle in 1828. Some 28 years later, Berg (1856), transferred P. pubescens to the genus Campomanesia as Campomanesia pubescens (Martius ex De Candolle) O. Berg. Landrum (1986) , in the revision of the genus Campomanesia , includes Psidium hians as a synonym of Campomanesia pubescens . However, after examining images of the type specimens of P. hians and P. pubescens ( Campomanesia pubescens ), we conclude that they are two completely different species as they differ both in their vegetative and reproductive parts. Psidium hians , should, therefore, be considered an accepted name.

Examining herbarium material of P. hians and P. nutans , we observed that these two do not have vegetative and reproductive morphological differences. We therefore consider that P. nutans should be considered as a synonym of P. hians .
