Ecnomina irrorata Kimmins View in CoL in Mosely and Kimmins, 1953: 385, fig. 264. — Neboiss 1977: 57, figs 257–260. — Neboiss 1986:153.

Daternomina irrorata Neboiss 2003: 65 , figs 16 C–F.

Diagnosis. Daternomina irrorata is distinguished by the long, fused inferior appendages, with a relatively shallow notch apically.

Description. Head, body and wings brown; wings shown in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–6 . Forewing length about 2.8–2.9 times width: male 4.0– 5.6 mm, female 5.0–6.0 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, about 1.6–1.7 times length of fork 3, nygma present; fork 3 about 1.7–2.7 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 1.5–2.2 times length cross-vein m; r-m and m displaced at fork 3 by about 1.1–1.6 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 length similar to fork 3; fork 5 long, about 1.8 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3 times width; fork 2 with short footstalk, length footstalk 0.3–0.7 times length cross-vein r-m, fork 2 about 1.4–1.8 times length of fork 3.

Male. (Revised after Kimmins in Mosely and Kimmins 1953; Neboiss 1977, 2003). Tergum X membranous with a pair of small lobes ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 31–39 ). Superior appendages laterally compressed; in lateral view robust, sub-rectangular, length about 2.5 times width ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 31–39 ); in dorsal view, relatively slender, length about 4 times width, with spines on inner surface ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 31–39 ). Phallus simple, tube-like; with a single, elongate, down-curved sword-like process (phallic guide) arising from near the base of the inferior appendages ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 31–39 ). Inferior appendages dorso-ventrally flattened, fused to form a single, elongate plate; in ventral view length about 2.0 times width, with a small central notch apically ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 31–39 ); in lateral view slender, slightly curved, length about 6 times width ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 31–39 ).

Female. (Revised after Neboiss 1977). Genitalia with a pair of large relatively widely separated ‘tongueshaped’ lobes with pointed apices, on sternite VIII ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 55–62 ).

Type material (not seen): Holotype male, Tasmania, Deloraine , 26–27 Dec 1884, McLachlan Collection. ( BMNH).

Remarks. Daternomina irrorata is common and widespread in Tasmania and Victoria (latitudinal range 36°08' - 43°00'S). Kimmins’ (in Mosely and Kimmins 1953) and Neboiss’s (1977, 2003) figures have been redrawn to allow direct comparisons and to accompany the description that is revised in light of new interpretations of Daternomina genitalic and wing structures.
