Diagnosis. As for genus.
Distribution. Tropical and subtropical areas of all oceans, except eastern Pacific ( Nielsen et al. 1999), at depths from 984 to 2500 m.
Remarks. First record in Brazilian waters. Collected from several stations off Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro, from 984 to 2271 m. Previously known from 1075 to 2500 m ( Nielsen et al. 1999).
Very rarely more than 6 rakers on anterior gill arch. Dorsal, caudal and anal fins joined or not. Basibranchial tooth patches absent. Pelvic fins with a single ray in each, absent in a few species. Viviparous. Forty-eight genera with 185 species.
