Tydeus cf. maculatus sp. n. IV, Ripka & Kaźmierski 1998a: 412 Tydeus cf. maculatus sp. n., Çobanoglu & Kaźmierski 1999: 76.

Type material. Tritonymph holotype, 1 tritonymph paratype (slide N o 925 =AK H-295) from Aesculus pavia L. ( Hippocastanaceae ), HUNGARY: Zirc (Veszprém County), 26 May 1997, coll. G. Ripka. 1 tritonymph paratype (slide N o 929 =AK H-297) from leaves of Acer campestre L. ( Aceraceae ), HUNGARY: Zirc (Veszprém County), 26 May 1997, coll. G. Ripka; 3 tritonymph paratypes (slide N o 929b =AK H-298) from leaves of Acer campestre , same locality and date, coll. G. Ripka.

Additional material. 2 tritonymphs (slide N o 8-330) from Fagus orientalis Lipsky (Fagaceae) , TURKEY: Istranca Mountains, Kirklareli, 14 June 1992, coll. Sultan Çobanoglu.

Type repository. DAM.

Etymology. The specific name is a combination of the empodial claw (present in this species) and the name of the closely related T. maculatus (Momen and Lundqvist) (in which the empodial claw is absent) (Momen & Lundqvist 1996).

Relation to host. Underside of leaves of Aesculus pavia . Aphididae : Periphyllus testudinaceus (Fernie) ; Phytoseiidae : Euseius finlandicus (Oudemans) ; Tydeidae : Tydeus calabrus (Castagnoli) [lower side of leaves].

Acer campestre . Eriophyidae : Aceria cephalonea (Nalepa) ; Tydeidae : Tydeus calabrus (Castagnoli) ; Meyerellidae : Triophtydeus triophthalmus (Oudemans) ; Winterschmidtiidae : Czenspinskia trasversostriata (Oudemans) [underside of leaves of field maple].

Differential diagnosis. The new species is similar to Tydeus maculatus , mainly because of dorsal ornamentation (”Tydulosus” type, or “basket weave”—see Kaźmierski [1998b]). However, it differs by two features: [1] the presence of the empodial claws (absent in T. maculatus ), and [2] the shape of the tip of tarsal eupathidium pζ, which is forked distally (instead of “T”-shaped in T. maculatus ).

Description. TRITONYMPH (holotype). Organotaxy of gnathosoma, idiosoma and appendages—typical for genus (Kaźmierski 1989b). Idiosoma. Body oval, yellowish. Length 245, width 185. Paratype tritonymphs: length 240–245 / width 180–185. Dorsally, laterally and on the circumference of ventral side covered with granulations, “basket weave”. Striae between setae d1 transverse. On aspidosoma striae are longitudinal. Eyes not observed.

Bothridial setae (bo) whip-like, rather flabby than stout and longer than the other dorsal body setae. Latter are serrated and representing 2 different kinds: (1) narrowly lanceolate and pointed distally: ro, la, ex, c1, c2, d1, and (2) flat, spatulate: e1, f1, f2, h1, h2 and ps1. Lengths as follows: bo 37, ro 15, la 18, ex 20, c1 18, c2 20, d1 18, remaining setae (e1 – ps1, spatulate)—15. Setae ps2 acute 12. Distances: c1–c1 43, d1–d1 32, e1–e1 105, f1–f1 48, h1–h1 48, ps1–ps1 14, f1–h1 27. Lyrifissures invisible, probably hidden between granules of ornamentation. Coxal organ (cg) oval. Venter striated medially. Striae longitudinal in metasternal region. Genital region with 2 genital pores flanked by 4 pairs of genital and aggenital setae: genital setal formula: (4-4). Paraproctal lips prominent and strongly striated. Setae ps2 laterally of and close to lips. Epimeral formula: (3-1-4-2).

Gnathosoma. Visible from above. Cheliceral stilettos similar in length to palpal tarsus (only slightly longer). Eupathidium (pζ) insignificantly bent, forked distally. Seta d forked distally. Minute seta ba relatively well developed. Palpal chaetotaxy: 6+ ω –2 –2. Measurements: stiletto 15.5, palpal femuro-genu 20/9, df 12, dg 13, t’ 15, t’’ 8, palpal tarsus 14/5, (pζ) 5.

Legs. Setation: I (8+ ω -3+ k’’ -3-3-1), II (6+ ω -2-2-2-0), III (5-2-1-1-1), IV (5-2-1-1-0). Solenidiotaxy: 2 (ωI + ωII). Tarsus+apotele I: length 33, width 12, height 13. Length of ωI: 4, ft’ 12, ft’’ζ 18, k’’ 4 (forked distally), ωII 1.5. Empodial hooks (om) present, small.
