Tripeta cynarae Rondani, 1870 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1870c: 108 (key, as cinarae ), 115 (description, as cynarae ).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in colle ditionis parmensis [ Parmese hill ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing right wing) ( MZUF: Box 32): Tripeta Mgn / cynarae, Rndn. , Parma / 1716.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Orellia cynarae ( Foote 1984: 105) ; valid species, as Terellia cynarae ( Belcari et al. 1995b: 10, Norrbom et al. 1999: 221).

REMARKS: Rondani (1870c: 115) described Tripeta cynarae from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Semel marem tantum inveni [I found only the male]”. We found one syntype in this study. Rondani (1870c) named the species as “ cinarae ” in his key (p. 108) and as “ cynarae ” in his description (p. 115). Norrbom et al. (1999: 221) considered Tripeta cinarae as an incorrect spelling of Tripeta cynarae . O’Hara et al. (2011: 208) incorrectly considered Tripeta cinarae to be the valid name. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Tripeta , which is an “unjustified emendation of Trypeta Meigen, 1803 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 185).
