Abbreviated Description. Indumentum of appressed simple basifixed hairs, leaflets 1–3(–4), opposite to alternate, laterals 3 × 1.9–8 × 3.5 cm, elliptic to oblanceolate, terminal leaflet and unifoliolate leaflets 9 × 3.5–16 × 7.5 cm; inflorescence 1–10 cm long, a slender few-flowered thyrse, or sometimes a small raceme in female, petals 4–5, 1.5–2 mm long, fused for 1/3–1/2 their length, valvate, filaments completely fused in a staminal tube, margin with lanceolate to subulate lobes, anthers (4–)5, nectary absent, ovary 2-locular, locules with 2 collateral ovules, capsule 1.6–2.3 cm long, 2(–3)-valved, narrowly ellipsoid to oblong, smooth to weakly verrucose, with scattered appressed hairs or glabrous, seed 1(–2), completely surrounded by a thin arillode.
Distribution. Still known with certainty only from the southern Peten Peninsula of Guatemala and Belize and extending into northern Honduras. There is one doubtful sterile specimen from the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua which may belong to this species (Little 25172 - Nicaragua, Zelaya, 60 km NW of Puerto Cabezas (NW1483) (MO)).
Additional Collections Examined. MEXICO: Chiapas: Lacanja-Chanzayab, Municipio Ocosingo (NW1691), Martinez-Ico 480 (MEXU).
GUATEMALA. Alta Verapaz: Semococh (NW1589), Contreras 4708 (MO); 2 km S of Jolomylix, Teleman, Panzos (NW1589), Martinez et al. 22899 (K). Izabal: Puerto Mendez - Cadenas, Rio Gracias (NW1589), Contreras 9190 (MO, NY). Petén:Cansis, Cadenas road (NW1589), Contreras6404 (MO, NY); Cadenas, Rio Sarstum (NW1589), Contreras 6780 (NY).
MAP 62. Distribution of Trichilia breviflora Blake & Standl. Solid dots, distribution pre-1981, open dots new records 1981–2010.
BELIZE. Toledo: Southern Maya Mountains, Bladen Nature Reserve (NW1688), Davidse 36374 (K), Davidse &
Buchanan 36932 (K), Davidse & Holland 36561 (K), 36643 (K), Davidse et al. 35891 (MO), Holst et al. 5147 (K). HONDURAS. locality unknown (NW1586), Hazlett 3224 (FHO). Relationships. Because of its unifoliolate leaves this species was grouped with the Colombian T. acuminata (FN28: 217 (1981)), but the ITS analysis does not support this. In this case geographical distribution is a better guide to relationship as the species is placed next to the co-occuring T. minutiflora and T. moschata .
