ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 44.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile]” ( Macquart 1840: 25) [type locality for Thereva lugubris Macquart, 1840 ].
TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Melanothereva lugubris ( Macquart, 1840) ( Holston 2004: 56, Webb et al. 2013: 15).
REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 44) moved Bibio lugubris Fabricius, 1787 to the genus Thereva Latreille, 1797 and proposed the new replacement name Thereva morio for Thereva lugubris Macquart, 1840 , preoccupied by (1787: 328). The type material for Thereva morio will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Thereva lugubris . The type material of this latter species is preserved in the ZMUC.
