Etymology. The specific epithet is a noun in apposition taken from the type­locality.

Diagnosis. ♂♂ of S. itabaiana differ from all other Synotaxus species by the large, flattened and granulated paracymbium ( Figs. 15–16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). ♀♀ present lateral atria on the epigynum ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ), as S. turbinatus and S. ecuadorensis , but differ by the sub­oval shape of spermathecae ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ).

Description. ♂ (holotype). Body, palps and legs white. Cephalic region pilose. Ocular area overhanging clypeus, with a short and stout, curved median macrosetae. Legs thin, covered with numerous setae. Abdomen elongated, pointed posteriorly and scarcely covered with setae. Total length 3.6, carapace 1.2 long, 1.0 wide. Patella­tibia I length 5.4, II 3.0, III 1.3, IV 2.6. Abdomen 2.4 long, 0.8 wide. Patellar apophysis bifid, with a large and a short pointed branch. Paracymbium concave in ventral view and with a prolateral branched swelling. TTA with a ventral and an apical process, the latter with a curved, pointed projection ( Figs. 15–16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ).

♀ (paratype). Coloration, body shape and pilosity as in ♂. Total length 5.1, carapace 1.0 long, 1.0 wide. Patella­tibia I length 4.8, II 2.9, III 1.2, IV 2.4. Abdomen 4.0 long, 1.0 wide. Copulatory ducts inconspicuous, apparently absent. Fertilization ducts short and stout. Accessory sacs posteriorly connected to spermathecae ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ).
