Suberites tortuosa var. austral Cuartas, 1986 View in CoL

( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 )

Suberites tortuosa var. austral Cuartas, 1986: 38 View in CoL , figs. 13–14.

The variety was described by Cuartas from the North Patagonian coast of Argentina, Provincia de Rio Negro, off Bahía Creek, 41.1°S 68.98°W, depth unknown (holotype Museo de La Plata, Dept. of Invertebrates, Po. 2). It differs from the typical variety Suberites tortuosus Lévi (1959: 125 View in CoL , pl. 5 fig. 4, text-fig. 14, described from S„o Tomé, West Africa, approximate coordinates 0.3833°N 6.75°E, depth not given, type material in MNHN), in the size of the tylostyles (length 250–410 µm vs. 150–900 µm in the typical variety). Cuartas stated that there is a great resemblance in shape between the two varieties, but her specimen does not show clear branches, merely lobate digitations. To acknowledge the differences, I propose to recognize the var. austral View in CoL at the species level, to be named Suberites austral nom.nov. with authorship and year of the present work (due to the variety being erected after 1960, cf. ICZN art. 45.5.1), with description and type material taken from Cuartas.
