Perennial, rhizome filiform, stem slender to filiform, terete. Leaves submersed, narrowly linear, 10–30 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide, 3-veined, obtuse or rounded at apex, straight at base, stipules 80– 20 mm long, brownish, adnate to mm to leaf. Spike 2–4 mm long, peduncle 40–70 mm long, as thick as the stem. Tepals 1.5 mm long, anthers 1mm long. Carpels 4, fruits 2.9–3.3 mm long. Stele of four bundles type, endodermis of U-type, interlacunar bundles present, subepidermal bundles absent.
This species is mainly distinguished from S. filiformis (Persoon) Boerner (1912b: 713) by the larger fruits and the robust shape.
Worldwide distribution: —W ( Turkey, Afghanistan) and C Asia.
Distribution in Iran: —North, West, Central, South.
Flowering time: —From spring to summer.
