Subfamily Stomatolepadinae subfam. nov.

Stomatolepadinae Ross & Frick, 2007b: 24, nom. nud.

Type genus. Stomatolepas Pilsbry, 1910: 304 .

Diagnosis (amended). Wall shallow to deep, bowl- or boat-shaped; parietal midribs, sulci and teeth absent; sutural elaborations well-developed, simple or antler-like (bringing mantle tissue in contact with host tissue); longitudinal tubes absent (enlarged, longitudinal sutural channels circulatory rather than parietal canals).

Genera and species included. Stephanolepas muricata Fischer, 1886 ; Stomatolepas elegans ( Costa, 1840) ; Stomatolepas pilsbryi Frick, Zardus & Lazo-Wasem, 2010a ; Stomatolepas praegustator Pilsbry, 1910 ; Stomatolepas pulchra Ren, 1980 ; Stomatolepas transversa Nilsson-Cantell, 1930 .

Remarks. Frick et al. (2010a) provide details noting that Stomatolepas dermochelys Monroe & Limpus, 1979 is a junior synonym of S. elegans ( Costa, 1840) and they designate a neotype for S. elegans . Additionally, a recent discovery brought to my (MGF) attention by W. Newman (via C. Boyko) is that the correct date for Costa’s description of S. elegans is 1840, and not 1838 as historically noted (see Pilsbry 1916: 289).
