Pergularia benthamiana Champ. nom. nud. on [K000873058]

Distribution and ecology:— Widespread in southern China, also occurring in Japan. Jasminanthes mucronata is the most widespread species in the genus. It grows from low elevation to 850 m.

Conservation status:— A very widespread species, the proposed conservation assessment is Least Concern (LC, IUCN 2012).

Notes:— A description is published in Li et al. (1995: 242) based on Chinese materials and in Yamazaki (1993: 178) based on Japanese materials.

No type is present for Jasminanthes mucronata as the species was described by Blanco based on a cultivated specimen grown on in the Philippines from seeds collected in China ( Merrill 1918). The name was considered of uncertain application by Forster (1995) who used the name Marsdenia chinensis for this taxon. Li et al. (1995) used instead the name Jasminanthes mucronata . The correct application of Jasminanthes mucronata is fixed here by selecting a neotype.

Stephanotis chinensis was described based on material described as “A single plant was found in April, 1849, climbing over the top of a small Oak-tree in the thick jungle of the Happy Valley.” Two sheets Champion 435 collected in April 1849 in Hong Kong are present at K and both are indicated by Forster (1995: 699) as holotype (now considered as a first step lectotypification). The duplicate [K000873058] is a more complete sheet and is selected as lectotype (second step).

No type was mentioned for Stephanotis japonica Makino ex Nakai and only indicated as “Hab. in Hondo austr. et Shikoku” therefore no type is designated at this moment.

The type of Stephanotis lutchuensis is T. Miyagi 29. In the protologue the herbarium it was deposited is not indicated and therefore a lectotypification is required. Following Index Herbariorum (Thiers, continuously updated) Miyagi collections can be found at RYU. Up to now I have been unable to confirm with the RYU curator if T. Miyagi 29 is extant and therefore a lectotypification cannot be made.
