Remarks: Name available from plate (1837), text with description by Valenciennes, 1847:9 as Hydrocyon argenteus (Menezes, 1976:22) . There is some confusion in the literature regarding the dates of publication of the contents of the D’Orbigny’s Voyage dans l’Amérique Méridionale. The date of the plate by Valenciennes presented here follows Sherborn, Griffin (1934).
