Spilogaster sigillata Rondani, 1866 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 110 (key), 116 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in planitie agri parmensis [ Parmese plains ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing mid-legs) ( MZUF: Box 24): Spilogaster Mcqrt / sigillata Rnd., Alpi, Parm. / 1307; 1 ♂, syntype ( MSNPV: Box 94): Spilogaster sigillata R., 583, ♂, Parma.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Limnophora maculosa ( Meigen, 1826) View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 180, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 15).
REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 116) described Spilogaster sigillata from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being two specimens in the type series found in this study: “ Raro mascula tantum legi [Rarely I collected few males]”. We consider the two specimens as syntypes. The locality “Alpi” [Alps] on the species label pinned to the bottom of the box above the specimen probably refers to an additional male (non-type) from “ Varal [= Varallo (= Vercelli, Italy)]” on the Alps, which is not the type locality. Not included in the type series is also a female numbered “1307” in the MZUF because of its sex .
