Sphecogaster biplagiatus Lacordaire, 1868: 472 . Monné, 2018a: 758 (cat.; in syn.). Syn. nov.

According to Lacordaire (1868) (translated): “It [ Sphecogaster ] includes only a large and beautiful species of Suriname, which has been communicated to me by Mr. C. A. Dohrn.” Bates (1870), suggested the synonymy between Sphecogaster and Sphecomorpha , and between Sphecogaster biplagiatus and Sphecomorpha chalybea : “Lacordaire appears entirely to have overlooked Newman’s genus. I am inclined to think the species he describes is the same as Newman’s.” Evidently, “I am inclined to think” cannot be considered a formal synonymy. However, the synonymy indicated by Bates (1870) is correct. Accordingly, S. biplagiatus is here formally synonymized with S. chalybea .

Monné (2018a) and Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2018) reported the holotype in the CMSP collection. However, it is in the ZMPA collection.
