Fringilla syriaca Bonaparte

Fringilla syriaca Hemprich, 1824 [Unpublished label name.]

Fringilla syriaca, Hempr. & Erh. [sic] ( Serinus syriacus, Bp. )” Bonaparte, 1850: 523.

Now. Serinus syriacus Bonaparte, 1850 . See Hartert (1903: 85).

Type series. Bonaparte (1850: 523) wrote “Mus. Berol. ex As. acc. Bischerre”, thus referring to specimen(s) from Bcharré in ZMB. Lichtenstein (1825, Nr. 492) listed only one such specimen (see also Inventory Catalogue of the ZMB and Lichtenstein 1854: 46), which is thus the holotype.

Holotype: ZMB 6644, skin, unsexed [= juv.], collected on an unknown date [= 5–24 July 1824] at “Bischerra” (label) [= Bcharré, Lebanon].

Type locality. Fringilla syriaca was described from “ As. occ. Bischerra” (Bonaparte 1850: 523), which corresponds with the label data. The type locality is thus Bcharré, Lebanon, where the holotype was collected during 5– 24 July 1824. Lichtenstein's (1825, Nr. 492) statement that the specimen originated from “Bairut” is erroneous.

Remarks. Bonaparte (1850: 523) believed that he had transferred Fringilla syriaca “Hempr. et Ehr. [sic!]” to another genus, but in fact he described the species in the binomen Serinus syriacus ( ICZN 1999, Art. 51.1).
