Tachinus Gravenhorst, 1802: 134 (species included: subterraneus , bipustulatus , humeralis , rufipes , signatus , pullus , castaneus , sordidus , fimetarius , laticollis , corticinus , immaturus , collaris , marginellus , suturalis , melanocephalus , striatus , lunulatus , atricapillus , analis , merdarius , batychrous , fimbriatus , memnonius , marginalis , niger , cinctus ). TYPE SPECIES: Staphylinus rufipes Linné , fixed by subsequent designation by Latreille, 1810: 427 [Note: Latreille’s fixation was stated as “ Oxyporus rufipes, Fab. ” Fabricius either repeated the characters published by Linné for rufipes or substituted “nitidus ” or “glaber ”, so all his uses of rufipes evidently referred to the species named by Linné. Only in 1781 did Fabricius cite De Geer’s work but his also listed that of Linné. Latreille, on the other hand, attributed the name to Gravenhorst in 1804 (who attributed it to De Geer) and also cited the concepts of Gravenhorst, De Geer, Paykull, Olivier and Fabricius in 1806. Latreille’s understanding of the species is unclear but it was probably that of Gravenhorst and De Geer. Latreille cited the type species as Oxyporus rufipes, Fab. Fabricius included rufipes in Oxyporus in 1793 and 1801. If we accept Latreille’s type species fixation for Tachinus as stated, that is with attribution of “ Oxyporus rufipes ” to Fabricius, then Linné’s rufipes is the type species of Tachinus because Fabricius was clearly referring to that concept. However, if we use what may have been Latreille’s concept of the species, then De Geer’s use of rufipes (a misidentification) may have been the intended type species. Westwood (1845: 54) examined the type of rufipes Linné , determined it differed from the rufipes cited by various authors, and stated it to be a variety of pullus ].

Conurus Stephens, 1829a: 22 (species included: pubescens , marshami , cellaris , bipustulatus , immaculatus , pusillus , obscuratus , obscuripennis , flavus , flavipes , melanocephalus ; [Note: Most species described in this genus are in Sepedophilus ]; preoccupied by Kuhl, 1820). TYPE SPECIES: Oxyporus bipustulatus Fabricius , fixed by subsequent designation by Westwood, 1838a: 19 [Note: The characters used for Conurus bipustulatus (Fabricius) by Stephens (1832) suggest that his use of C. bipustulatus in 1829 and 1832 are almost certainly misidentifications of a species currently in Sepedophilus (but which one is uncertain). However, even if the understanding of the type species is changed and Conurus (a preoccupied name) and its replacement names ( Conosoma , also preoccupied, and Conosomus ) are moved to Sepedophilus , the name of the latter genus does not change as it is the oldest name so it is best to accept the nominal species cited by Stephens and Westwood (for the latter’s type species designation)].
