Selenophorus picinus Boheman 1858

= Selenophorus (Gynandropus Dejean) sp. = hylacis species-group, incertae sedis

Type information. Lectotype female hereby designated, labeled: Hono- / lulu. // Kinb. // Type. // 5127 / E91 + (blue label) // picinus / Boh. // Lectotype / Selenophorus / picinus /Boheman / J.K. Liebherr 2009 (red label) // Selenophorus / ( Gynandropus Dejean ) sp. / hylacis sp. grp. / det. G.E. Ball 2009. The lectotype consists of a pterothorax plus abdomen, with the head and prothorax broken off, disassociated, and lost from the labeled type specimen.

Diagnosis. Selenophorus picinus can be placed as a member of the hylacis species-group (equivalent to the subgenus Gynandropus Dejean ) based on: 1) piceous elytra with bluish reflection caused by dense transverse-line microsculpture loosely connected into a transverse mesh; 2) absence of a scutellar striole associated with the parascutellar seta ( Fig. 6); and 3) elongate metatarsomere 1 more than twice as long as apical tibial spur ( Lindroth 1968). The mesotarsi of the female type specimen are not dilated as mentioned by Lindroth for the North American Selenophorus (Gynandropus) hylacis (Dejean) , but most other Neotropical species assigned to this infrageneric group also lack such dilated female mesotarsomeres. The punctures in elytral striae 3, 5, and 7 are all small. The outer half of the eighth and the ninth elytral intervals bear a pelage of fine microsetae in addition to the articulated macrosetae.

Taxonomic Decision. Taxonomic limits among species of the subgenus Gynandropus have been based principally on pronotal configuration (e.g. Bates 1881 –1884). Given a type specimen lacking the forebody, only a concerted comparison with a complete study set of Gynandropus taxonomic material—including comparative female specimens—will produce a reasonable decision regarding the nomenclatural status of this name. Lorenz (1998a, 2005a) listed S. picinus as nomen dubium, a decision not warranted based on the existence of the type specimen. We reinstate it as valid, while leaving its placement within Gynandropus to be determined by future taxonomic study.

Type Locality. Based on the identical labeling shared between S. insularis and S. picinus , the type locality of the latter is provisionally corrected to Panama.
