Sarcophaga pigmea Rondani, 1851
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1851: 365.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ regioni equatoriali dell’America, principalmente nelle vicinanze del Rio Napo [ Equatorial regions of ( South ) America, mainly in the vicinity of Napo River]” ( Rondani 1851: 357) .
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.
CURRENT STATUS: doubtful species of Sarcophaginae View in CoL ( Lopes 1969: 54, Pape 1996: 445).
REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 365) described Sarcophaga pigmea from just the female sex, giving a single measurement of lengths, from material collected by Osculati (1850) during his journey through equatorial South America. Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported this material as destroyed. We also did not find any material during this study. Osculati (1850: 240) listed “ pygmea ” under the generic name Sarchophaga but did not describe the species. The spelling “ Sarchophaga ” is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1826 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 160).
