Lectotype (designated by Stirton 1984):— SOUTH AFRICA. Eastern Cape: Sturmberge near Witte- and Zwartkeyrivier , Tambukiland , Ecklon & Zeyher 1710 (lectotype PRE; isolectotypes P02579508, L.1909830)
Extensive descriptions are given by Stirton (1984) and by Sochor (2019).
Ecology: —Mountain grasslands on high levels.
Distribution: —In the mountains around Beaufort-West (Western Cape) and Graaff Reinet (Eastern Cape); the wider Drakensberg area, north to southern Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Note: — Rubus ludwigii was distributed by Drège under the name R. rhodacantha E.Mey. ex Drège (1843: 47) ; this name is later than R. ludwigii and moreover a nomen nudum.
Specimens:— SOUTH AFRICA. Eastern Cape: Windvogelberg in Zwartkei , 3500–4000 ft, 18 November 1832, Drège 3565 ( P02579516 ) ; Gaatje , 3500–4000 ft, Drège s.n. ( P02579517 ) ; Drège s.n. ( P02579509 , P02579512 ) .
