Rhabdias nipponica Yamaguti, 1935

Synonyms: Rhabdias incerta Wilkie, 1930 (sensu Lu, 1934; part.); R. polypedates Yamaguti, 1941 , R. montana Yamaguti, 1954 (see Goldberg et al., 2003).

Hosts: Buergeria japonica ( Amphibia: Anura : Rhacophoridae ); Fejervarya limnocharis , Hoplobatrachus rugulosus (Discoglossidae) ; Glandirana rugosa , Hylarana guentheri , Odorrana narina , Pelophylax nigromaculatus (Ranidae)

Distribution: Eastern Palaearctic ( China, North Viet Nam, Japanese Isles).

Description. Body length 4.76 (4.12–5.52) mm, maximum width 178 (158–216). Body cuticle swollen, the swelling wider in the anterior part. Cephalic lips small. Vestibulum prominent. Buccal capsule funnel-shaped, 10 (8–12) deep and 12 (10–14) wide. Anterior end of oesophagus surrounding buccal capsule. Oesophagus club- shaped, 305 (274–324) long (6.4 [5.8–7.5] % of body length). Oesophagus width: 20 (18–22) at anterior end, 28 (22–32) at the middle of muscular part, 28 (24–32) at the middle of glandular part; width of posterior bulb 40 (36– 46). Nerve ring situated at 135 (100–149) from anterior end of oesophagus (44.5 [30.8–50.0] % of oesophagus length). Excretory glands as long as oesophagus or somewhat shorter. Intestine comparatively narrow in anterior part, gradually widening posteriorly. Rectum poorly sclerotised. Vulva situated at 2.58 (2.27–3.0) mm from anterior end (54.3 [51.4–57.1] % of total length). Vulva lips indistinct. Uteri wide, filled with numerous eggs. Eggs in distal uteri containing fully developed larvae. Egg size 78–89 × 39–53 (after Yamaguti, 1935). Tail conical, 250 (216–290) long (5.3 [4.5–5.9] % of body length). Tail end tapered.

Material studied: 20 specimens from P. nigromaculatus, Kyushu Island , Japan ( SIZK, material collected by Dr. Hasegawa) .
