Distribution. United States, southern California.
Remarks. The type locality of Q. quatei is Davis, California. Additional specimens are known from Anaheim, Riverside, Rialto, and Olive, in the area around Los Angeles, as well as Coachella, more to the east in southern California ( Cook 1956a), and from San Bernardino ( Cook 1975). Cook (1956a) mentioned specimens collected with citronella bait traps and Cook (1975) refers to specimens reared from Echinocactus polycephalus . This cactus species is widespread in the Mohave and Sonoran desert in Arizona (Yuma and Mojave Co.), California (Inyo, San Bernardino Valley, Riverside, and Imperial Co.), and Nevada (Lincoln and Clark Co.), and in the northwestern Sonora desert in Mexico ( Chamberland 1997). Echinocactus polycephalus was not part of the original flora of the area of Los Angeles and is not particularly common in gardens in the urban area.
A total of 292 males and 435 females were collected in our traps. The species was collected in the largest number of BioSCAN sites— 42 of our 47 sampling sites, with 196 collecting events. The most abundant sites for Q. quatei were sites 14, 29, 30 (Phase I), and 35 (Phase II). Mid-spring is clearly the season with the highest abundance of Q. quatei , while a second, autumn peak is clear in Phase Inot detected in Phase II. It is possible that Q. quatei can also develop in other kinds of rotting cactuses. The BOLDSystems has no records for the genus Quateiella .
