Description of gonopod. Straight in mesiocaudal view. Marginal suture on mesial side, straight; marginal process rounded to subtriangular, strongly bent towards cephalic side, not produced beyond the distal border of apex. Mesial process subtriangular, slightly downturned. Lateral process moderately long, approximatelly 60–65% of stem length (from proximal opening to caudal border of apex), distinctly bilobed, with distinct median concavity on caudal surface; lateral border with distinct median incision; proximal lobe broadly rounded, as wide as or slightly wider than distal lobe, with few scattered, minute setae on caudal, lateral surfaces; distal lobe broad, wider than lateral end of apex, strongly swollen distally on cephalic surface, with crest-like flange directed distally, forming cup-shaped receptacle. Distocaudal ridge distinct, narrow, well separated from the distal border of lateral process by distinct depression. Apex bent approximately 90° towards laterocephalic side; oblong, wide in distal view; caudal border with narrow notch near lateral end. Field of apical spines well developed, facing cephalolateral side.
Holotype and type locality. Male, cw 26.3, cl 17.0, USNM 276164. Panamá, Bocas del Toro Province, San Pedro River (Atlantic drainage).
Distribution. Eastern and southeastern Costa Rica, in both Atlantic and Pacific drainages, and northwesten Panama, Atlantic drainage ( Fig. 84 View FIGURE 84 ).
Remarks. Other species of Ptychophallus , such as P. colombianus , P. exilipes , P. montanus , and P. tumimanus , also show some degree of expansion of the distal lobe of the lateral process of the gonopod, but in none of these species this condition is so developed as in P. uncinatus . Ptychophallus uncinatus can be distinguished from the other congeners by the distinct flange in the border of the lateral process distal lobe that clearly surpasses the strongly bent apex. Other differences among these species were discussed by Campos & Lemaitre (1999).
Just as in P. uncinatus , the G1 of P. barbillaensis also shows a cup-shaped receptacle and the distal flange in the distal lobe of the lateral process ( Fig. 63 View FIGURES 61 – 70 ). The examination of the types of both P. barbillaensis and P. uncinatus revealed that their gonopods are morphologically very similar to each other, and they are hereby synonymyzed. Rodríguez & Hedström (2000) described P. barbillaensis and deposited the type specimens in the IVIC collection, which were posteriorly transferred to UCR-MZ.
