Peters, W. C. H. (1867a) Über die Flederhunde, Pteropi, und insbesondere über die Arten der Gattung Pteropus s. s. Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1867: 333 [319–333].

Valid name: Acerodon celebensis (Peters, 1867)

Lectotype (designated by Andersen 1912, 418, 425 footnote): ZMB 4012 View Materials , skin and skull, female, adult; “ Celebes ” = Sulawesi, Indonesia; collected by von Rosenberg, 1864, donated by Schlegel.

Comment: In the original description Peters provided no details on the number of specimens examined. Also there is no reference in the general catalogue that ZMB 4012 has been acquired from Leyden Museum as mentioned by Andersen (1912: 418). According to Dobson (1878: 68), the “type” is preserved in the collections of the RMNH, but he did not indicate a definite specimen. Jentink (1888: 150) listed for the RMNH a subadult male and an adult female from Celebes, collected by von Rosenberg in 1864, as “un des types de l´ espèce” [= syntypes]. Andersen (1912: 418, 425 footnote) maintained that an adult mounted specimen, ZMB 4012, would be the type (from Celebes), hence the designation here as lectotype.
