Saurita cryptoleuca Hampson, 1903: 340 (preoccupied). Holotype male, by monotypy: BRAZIL, Organ Mountains, Tijuca (R. J. Wagner); with five labels: “ Type ”, “Rio de Janeiro, Organ Mts., near Tijuca, S. R. Wagner, 1902-287”, “ Saurita cryptoleuca type ♂ Hmpsn”, “Kb-Dia-Nr. 552 B. Kreusel dok.”, and “BMNH(E) 1475618” (BMNH) [examined]. Saurita clandestina Zerny, 1912a: 81 , repl. n.
Current combination. Pseudomya clandestina (Zerny, 1912) , comb. nov.
Condition of the type. Wings slightly worn, otherwise in good condition.
Remarks. Saurita clandestina was erected as the objective replacement name for Saurita cryptoleuca Hampson, 1903 , a junior secondary homonym of Euchromia cryptoleuca Walker, 1854 , which was first placed in Saurita by Kirby (1892) and retained there by Hampson (1898). Hampson (1914) ignored the homonym, and illustrated this species as S. cryptoleuca in Hampson (1915). Draudt (1915) acknowledged the homonymy, and used S. clandestina as the valid name for S. cryptoleuca Hampson.
This species is here considered in Pseudomya Hübner , [1819] because Hampson (1898) and subsequent authors (Zerny 1912; Draudt 1915) considered its type species, P. tipulina Hübner , [1812], in Saurita . The origin of the mistake was the erroneous attribution of Sphinx melanthus Cramer, 1781 as the type species of Pseudomya . Because this name is older than Saurita Herrich-Schäffer , [1855], it takes precedence.
This nomenclatural change does not imply the rejection of P. clandestina ICZN (Art. 59.3).
