Pontinus macrocephalus (Sauvage, 1882) View in CoL

Remarks: No specimen was examined in this study. Pontinus macrocephalus was morphologically similar to P. tentacularis but could be distinguished by the counts of dorsal-fin rays (10 in P. macrocephalus vs. 9 in P. tentacularis ) and pectoral-fin rays (17 in P. macrocephalus vs. 16 in P. tentacularis ) ( Eschmeyer 1969; Eschmeyer and Randall 1975). We have checked all specimens of P. macrocephalus from the collections in Taiwan, but the counts of dorsal-fin rays and pectoral-fin rays are identical to P. tentacularis . The occurrence of P. macrocephalus in Taiwan needs to be confirmed.
