(Figs. 2, 12–14)
Bolitochara brevicolllis Kraatz, 1856: 40 .
Phymatura brevicollis: J. Sahlberg, 1876: 86 View in CoL ; Smetana, 2004: 440 (as valid species). Phymatura gyrophaenoides J. Sahlberg, 1876: 86 View in CoL (as valid species). Phymatura gyrophaenoides: Harold, 1877: 124 View in CoL (as synonym of P. brevicollis View in CoL ).
Redescription. Body length 2.1–2.3 mm. Body slightly glossy, pubescent; dark brown to brown, antennae and legs brown. Body more or less broad in dorsal aspect. Head. Slightly transverse, narrower than pronotum; eyes large in size, longer than temple, neck absent; antennomere 4 subquadrate, 5–10 transverse, slightly incrassate toward apex. Thorax. Pronotum transverse, about 1.5 times as wide as long, pubescent; hypomeron narrowly visible in lateral aspect; postero-lateral angles of elytra sinuate. Abdomen. Tergites III–VI transversely impressed. Genitalia. Median lobe ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 12 – 14 ) bulbous at base, apical process elongate and slender, flagellum well sclerotized and developed, long, tapering to apex; paramere ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12 – 14 ) with apical lobe of paramerite subcylindrical, with 4 setae, condylite short in length to apex of paramerite. Secondary sexual characteristics. Male: tergite VIII ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 14 ) broadly emarginate, 4 minute denticles present on each side of midline.
Material examined. KOREA: 3 exx, Hwanghae, Mt. Suyangsan, 2.vi.1974 ( ISEA).
Distribution. Korea (North), Russia (Central European territory, eastern Siberia, northern European territory, western Siberia), Europe.
Remarks. Phymatura brevicollis can be distinguished from the other Korean Phymatura species by the following characters: body in most specimens dark brown; abdomen unicolor; and male tergite VIII broadly emarginate with 8 denticles. This species was recorded by Paśnik (2001) from North Korea and no specimen has been collected in South Korea. We have studied three specimens deposited in ISEA and provided only a short description as dissected specimens were unavailable.
