Petagnia occlusa Rondani, 1856
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 61.
TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (very dirty, covered with mold, missing left wing and all legs) ( MZUF: Box 9): Petagna [sic!] Rdn. / subpetiolata Rnd. / 458; 1 ♀, syntype ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 166.10): syntype / Type / P. subpetiolata Ex. Coll. Big. / Verrall-Collin Palaearctic coll. Ox. Uni. Mus. Nat. Hist. ( OUMNH) OUMNH –1967–018 / Tachinidae Tachininae Petagnia subpetiolata Rondani, 1859 , Palaearctic.
CURRENT STATUS: nomen nudum ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 293); valid species ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 140, 2020: 771) (also see Remarks).
REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 61) key for the genus Petagnia Rondani 1856 lists Petagnia occlusa as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. Rondani (1859b: 24) without any explanation, proposed the substitute name Petagnia subpetiolata for Petagnia occlusa , the type species of the genus described in Rondani (1856). Schiner (1861b: 527), Braun & Bergenstamm (1889: 129), Bezzi & Stein (1907: 402), Herting (1969: 201), Mesnil (1973: 1167), Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 293), Pape et al. (1995: 25); Cerretti (2010: 325) considered Petagnia occlusa as a nomen nudum and Petagnia subpetiolata as a valid species. Sabrosky (1999: 239) considered Petagnia occlusa as the valid name and Petagnia subpetiolata as a substitute name. O’Hara et al. (2011: 140) considered both Petagnia occlusa and Petagnia subpetiolata as available names. We consider all the nominal type species proposed in Rondani (1856) as available because he always provided elements for their identification, therefore Petagnia subpetiolata is an unjustified substitute name and a junior synonym of Petagnia occlusa . Even if Petagnia subpetiolata has been usually used as the valid name and Petagnia occlusa as a nomen nudum, Article 23.9.1 (I.C.Z.N 1999) cannot be applied since at least Sabrosky (1999: 239) considered Petagnia occlusa as a valid name. We found two syntypes in this study.
