Papilio hornimani mwanihanae Kielland, 1987
Papilio hornimani mwanihanae Kielland, 1987:122 , figs 7,8. Holotype male, Tanzania: Sanje (Kielland), BMNHE # 14780 [examined].
This subspecies was described, according to Kielland (1987), from nine males collected between 1981 and 1985 from the Mwanihana Forest Reserve, Udzungwa Mountains, in the Kilombero District of eastern-central Tanzania, over 300 km southwest of the Usambaras. The holotype (Figure 2D), which bears the labels // Sanje, Ifakara, 300 m, 10.viii.1982, J. Kielland // BM 1990-166 // BMNHE # 14780 //, is deposited in BMNH. Forewing length: 51.4 mm; forewing band width: 8.1 mm; hindwing band width: 11.3 mm. This smaller and disjunct race seems distinctive, notably in the relatively broad hindwing discal band, and the small size of the hindwing submarginal spots. However, in the holotype the submarginal spots are only slightly smaller than those of lectotype of P. hornimani View in CoL .
Seven of the eight paratypes are deposited in ABRI, Nairobi. Of these, four are ex Jan Kielland Collection (three collected by Kielland, one by Congdon), and two more are from the Congdon collection. The seventh, dated xii.1985, was collected and presented to ABRI by J.P. Lequeux, who has two further specimens, obtained at the same time, in his private collection in Paris, one of which is the eighth paratype. The ABRI specimens have now been labelled as paratypes, and a similar label has been sent to Paris for addition to the paratype in the Lequeux Collection. The two females of P. h. mwanihanae in ABRI are the only examples known to us; they do not form part of the type series .
