Genus Paroxystele Schultz, 1970 †
Type species. Trochus patulus Brocchi, 1814 View in CoL , OD (Schultz 1970: 218); Pliocene , Italy .
Diagnosis. Broad trochiform shells with moderately flat teleoconch whorls, rounded basal angulation and flat to concave base. Sculpture consisting of prominent spiral cords. Umbilicus largely or fully sealed by callus. Aperture strongly prosocline.
Remarks. An extinct genus, which originated during the late Oligocene with widespread Miocene distribution in the NE Atlantic, the Proto-Mediterranean Sea and the entire Paratethys Sea. Paroxystele persisted into the early Pleistocene in the Mediterranean Sea. Note that Paroxystele is feminine.
