Osbornellus latus Domínguez & Godoy View in CoL , sp. nov.
( Figs. 29a–29e)
Description. Length: 5.5–6.0 mm. Member of the O. rarus group ( Fig. 1b). Similar to O. rarus . Broad whitish diamond-shaped spot behind apex extending to apical dot, rest of vertex mottled yellow-brown; coronal suture brown, bordered with white. Pronotum, scutellum and wings similar to O. rarus .
Male genitalia: Pygofer less than twice as long as wide, moderately projected posteriorly, apex widey rounded; with few macrosetae dispersed along apical third of pygofer ( Fig. 29a). Valve triangular, margins rounded, slightly curved in anterior half. Plates short, wide, apex rounded; with a few short, dispersed setae ( Fig. 29b). Style with apophysis long ( Fig. 29c). In ventral view aedeagus wide at base and curved; shaft shorter than ventral processes, straight and truncate apically; dorsal projection extending laterally ( Fig. 29d). Ventral processes slender, apressed basally then slightly divergent, straight and tapered. In lateral view shaft wide and narrowed toward apex, shorter than ventral processes; dorsal projection long, strong, curved caudad and truncate, apices sharp ventrally. Gonopore subapical. Ventral processes separated from shaft at base, curved at base then vertical, tapered to apices ( Fig. 29e).
Diagnosis. Externally very similar to O. rarus and O. costaricensis , but in ventral view the aedeagus of O. latus has the processes parallel and in lateral view the shaft is straight. In O. costaricensis the processes cross one another in ventral view and the shaft is curved ventrad in lateral view. In lateral view the aedeagus and ventral processes of O. rarus are of similar length, and the long shaft is curved dorsad.
Distribution. Known only from Costa Rica; 100–3000 m.
Etymology. This species is named for the wide aedeagal shaft in lateral view.
