Habitat: Substrate not recorded, 3–4 m ( Mortensen 1940).

Indian Ocean: East Africa to South Africa ( Ljungman 1867), Mozambique ( Ludwig 1899), West Indian Ocean, Mascarene Basin and Red Sea ( Clark & Rowe 1971), South Africa ( Clark & Courtman-Stock 1976; Olbers et al. 2019), Madagascar ( Cherbonnier & Guille 1978), Kenya ( Humphreys 1981), Seychelles ( Clark 1984), Scattered Isl. ( Conand et al. 2016).
Remarks: Ophiocomella valenciae has the same number of spines (up to 6) at each arm joint and a lighter variegated brown color pattern than O. scolopendrina .
