( Figs 9 View FIGURES 1 – 12 , 22 View FIGURES 13 – 25 , 42, 43 View FIGURES 26 – 48 , 51 & 52 View FIGURES 49 – 57 )
Neoitamus castaneipennis Tagawa 1981 Tagawa (1981: 195) View in CoL .
Large black flies, 18 to 25mm, the largest species of the South Korean Neoitamus View in CoL . N. castaneipennis View in CoL is recognized by the dense patch of irregular stout black bristles on the basal and medial dorsal and anterodorsal surface of the mid femur (also a character shared by Neoitamus setifemur Lehr View in CoL , however it has a less dense patch of bristles, and is a smaller fly). The wings are mostly black. Male epandrial lobe rounded and short ( Figs. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 12 , 51, 52 View FIGURES 49 – 57 ). Gonostylus rounded, medially wide ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ).
Head: Face ventral gold tomentose; dorsal gray tomentum and pollen. Gibbose area in lateral aspect unevenly contoured, projecting sharply on dorsal surface. Gena gold gray tomentose. Mystax with short black dorsal hair, abundant long ventral brown hair. Palpus with yellow and black hair. Lower occipital fringe with long yellow hair, anterior with sparse black hair merging into short black hair on mid occipital fringe. Postocular black hair long, proclinate, extending well over eye margin. Ocellar tubercle with yellow pollen and long black hair. Scape and pedicel with dorsal and ventral black hair. Thorax: Mesonotal stripe light gray. 1 row of distinct acrostical hair. Pleurae gold gray pollinose. Anepisternum with sparse posterior yellow and black hair. Katepisternum with sparse yellow hair. Anepimeron with yellow hair. Katatergite with a row of vertical yellow hair. Metepisternal row of vertical hair and yellow bristles. Anatergite with abundant yellow and black proclinate hair. Humeral callus shiny black with yellow hair. Chaetotaxy with sparse black posthumeral hair; 3 notopleural; 3 supraalar; 4 postalar; 7 8 dorsocentral bristles. Two strong black margin scutellar bristles. Legs: Yellow and black with predominantly yellow hair and black bristles. Coxae gold and gray tomentose. Fore femur black, yellow at distal apex with yellow and black hair; ventral row of black bristles basally. Mid femur black with yellow and black hair and a spread of strong black bristles along dorsal and anterodorsal surfaces, basal and medial. Hind femur black with yellow hair and black bristles. Fore tibia yellow, black at distal apex with yellow hair and yellow and black bristles. Mid tibia yellow, black at distal apex with yellow and black hair and yellow bristles. Hind tibia yellow, black at distal apex with yellow hair and yellow and black bristles. Tarsomeres yellow, distil segment black with yellow and black hair and bristles. Wings: Anterior portion (costal, subcostal, 1st and 2nd basal cells) tinged yellow; posterior portion of wing tinged dark brown. Abdomen: Gray and shiny black, yellow and black tomentose. Tergites 1–2 dull gray integument, sparse yellow tomentose, long yellow lateral marginal hair. Tergites 3–5 shiny blue black with short yellow lateral marginal hair, 2 5 stout lateral marginal bristles. Tergites 5–6 strongly constricted in males. Tergites 6–7 shiny blue black with black tomentum. Tergite 8 reduced in males. Sternites dull gray with long reddish yellow hair and bristles. Sternite 6 black. Sternite 7 with a row of long black medial and lateral marginal hair. Genitalia shiny blue black with black hair. Epandrial lobe apex widely cleft into two distinct lobes ( Figs. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 12 , 51, 52 View FIGURES 49 – 57 ): dorsal lobe apex sharp (in dorsal view); ventral lobe apex rounded, bearing long bristles. Gonocoxite short, rounded ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ). Distal gonocoxite apex with tapered flanges. Gonostylus flared, widely rounded with a slightly tapered apex ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ). Ovipositor elongated, compressed, similar to N. angusticornis ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 58 – 66 ).

Field notes. N. castaneipennis was collected at higher elevations in open rock strewn river bed areas with willow shrub. Females were ovipositing and probing in the hollow, upright ends of dead reeds, 20 centimeters high. N. castaneipennis occupies sympatric and allopatric habitats with N. angusticornis and N. cothurnatus univittatus .
