Range: —Southern Mexico to Panama; Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC). Specimens called this from southeastern Brazil are now referred to M. grata (Fée) Sundue (Sundue 2014) View in CoL .
Ecology: —Common; epiphytic, rarely saxicolous, in humid forests; 1400–3000(3600) m.
Notes: —Varies considerably with respect to the degree of proximal pinna reduction, rhizome scale size and color, and density of setae on the rachises; more than one species may be involved (Sundue 2014). Specimens intermediate towards M. alsopteris are known.
