Description. 3. Head. Palp and other mouthparts yellow to yellowish, face brownish, posterior parts of head brown. Antenna brownish, scape, pedicel and base of 1st flagellomere yellow. Length of 1st flagellomere about 2.5x, 2nd flagellomere 1.5x, its width. Thorax. Pronotum yellow, with 3–4 long setae. Scutum light brownish with 3 indistinct brownish longitudinal stripes, sometimes scutum brownish with yellowish longitudinal stripes. Anepisternum and preepisternum brownish. Scutellum brownish, with 4 long setae. Laterotergite brownish. Mediotergite brownish, bare. Wing. Length 3.2–4.1 mm. Wing hyaline, wing apex and small cell sometimes very slightly infuscate. Sc ending in R1 distad of middle of small cell, Sc1 missing, seldom broken, very short. Apical part of Sc bearing 9–17 small setae. Small cell about 1.5–2.5x long as wide. Cu fork slightly proximal, below or slightly distal to M fork. M ratios: 0.63–0.95, 0.85–1.18. Cu ratios: 0.67–0.77, 1.00–1.12. Small setae: M petiole: 0; M1: +; M2: +; Cu petiole: 0; Cu1: 2–+; Cu2: 3–+. Halter yellowish. Legs. Coxae and femora yellow, tibiae and tarsi brownish to brown. Coxa 2 without spur. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 0.78–0.80, bt2:t2 = 0.69–0.73, bt3:t3 = 0.55– 0.65. Abdomen. Tergites 1–5 brownish to brown, sometimes with yellow anterolateral spots, 6–7 brown. Sternites 1–5 yellowish, 6–7 brownish. Hypopygium. Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–D, yellow. Sternal lateral appendage comparatively short, wide, slightly D-shaped with middle part widest, apically rounded. Sternal submedian filament very slightly curved, relatively long, but shorter than sternal lateral appendage. Aedeagus apically rounded in lateral view ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C). Female. Wing length 4.0 mm. Thorax as in 3, scutum with indistinct color pattern, brownish with 2–3 paler longitudinal stripes. Abdominal tergites 1–5 brownish to brown, with large yellow anterolateral spots, 6 brown with yellowish anterolateral spots, 7 brown, sternites 1–5 yellow, 6–7 brownish. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 0.79, bt2:t2 = 0.71, bt3:t3 = 0.60. Terminalia yellowish.
Discussion. The apically rounded, D-shaped sternal lateral appendage of M. aonyx is widest at the midlength ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B), differing from the other species of the subgenus Cymomya . Also, the diagnostic sternal submedian filament is shorter than the sternal lateral appendage ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–B).
Etymology. The species name is a noun in apposition and refers to the clawless otter (genus Aonyx ).
