Neomuscina zosteris View in CoL (Shannon & del Ponte, 1926)

( Figs. 129–134 View FIGURES 127 – 132 View FIGURES 133 – 136 )

Muscina zosteris Shannon View in CoL & del Ponte 1926: 579 (description, original designation).

Neomuscina zosteris Shannon and Del Ponte 1928: 142 View in CoL (listed, new combination), 146 (key); Séguy 1937: 350 (catalogue); Snyder 1949: 4 (key), 8 (redescription), 10 (comment “possibly the same as Mydaea sparsiplumata Stein ”); Snyder 1954: 424 (key), 427 (comments); Pont 1972: 51 (catalogue); de Carvalho et al. 1993: 61 (catalogue); Couri & de Carvalho 2002: 150 –152 (key); Costacurta et al. 2003: 394 (collected); Couri & de Carvalho 2005: 9 (listed); de Carvalho et al. 2005: 99 (catalogue); Rodríguez-Fernández et al. 2006: 98 (listed).

Neomuscina fulvifrons Snyder 1949: 5 View in CoL (key), 20 (description); Snyder 1954: 427 (synonymized with N. zosteris View in CoL ).

Diagnosis: acrostichal 0:1 or 1:1; dorsocentral 2:4; mid femur with two preapical setae; hind tibia with one submedian anterodorsal seta; wing hyaline, with dark cloud on r-m; calypters with darkened borders; female: with more than one row of dorsal setae between segments VI and VII.

Color: general body coloration yellow; frons yellow, apex brownish yellow; facialia and parafacialia white; gena, antenna and palpus yellow; scutum brownish yellow with four, grey pruinose dark stripes; calypters white, with darkened borders; halter yellow; wing hyaline, with dark cloud on r-m ( Fig. 135 View FIGURES 133 – 136 ).

Male. Length. Body: 3.3–4.5 mm; wing: 5.6–6.7 mm.

Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.08–0.14 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 14–15 pairs of frontal setae; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta large and divergent; inner vertical seta small and convergent; outer vertical seta small and divergent.

Thorax: acrostichal 0:1 or 1:1 (some males may have a very weak second pair, with acrostichal 2:1); dorsocentral 2:4; intra-alars 2; fore tibia with distinct submedian anterodorsal setae; apex of fore tibia with setae on dorsal, posterodorsal, posteroventral and ventral surfaces; mid femur with row of setae on posteroventral and anteroventral surfaces from base to middle, reappearing near apex; mid femur with two preapical setae, on posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal, posterior, ventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with complete row of dorsal and anteroventral setae, and row of posteroventral setae from base to middle; hind tibia with one submedian anterodorsal seta and two submedian anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, and anteroventral setae at apex; wing with one dorsal and one or two ventral setae at apex of stem vein.

Abdomen: epandrium slightly projected.

Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 5.6–6.1 mm; wing: 5.8–6.4 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.26–0.32 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; eight pairs of frontal convergent setae, except for upper two pairs, divergent; ocellar and postocellar setae large and divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta large and divergent; two rows of dorsal setae between segments VI and VII; sternite VIII with strong spike-like setae; epiproct with four setae, setae in a square-shaped arrangement (2:2).

Comments: The acrostichal setae of N. zosteris are very variable. As indicated by Snyder (1954), both males and females may have acrostichal setae 0:1 or 1:1, the presence of the anterior pair being more common in males. We have identified a weak, second anterior pair in a few individuals. However, the dissection and examination of the terminalia (n = 4) did not indicate that those individuals belong to a different species and we believe that this second anterior pair of acrosticals is a variation within the species. Based on the description provided by Stein, Snyder (1949) suspected that Mydaea sparsiplumata Stein (= N. sparsiplumata [syntypes: NMW, ZMHB]) could be conspecific with N. zosteris . However, until the two type-species are examined, both should be held separately. Neomuscina ponti appears to be quite similar to N. zosteris .
