Microtus (Alexandromys) mongolicus Radde 1861 View in CoL

Microtus (Alexandromys) mongolicus Radde 1861 View in CoL , Melanges Biol. Acad. St. Petersbourg, Vol. 3: 681.

Type Locality: Russia, Transbaikalia (Chitinskaya Oblast), Omutnaya River, a tributary to the Amur River.

Vernacular Names: Mongolian Vole.

Synonyms: Microtus (Alexandromys) baicalensis Fetisov 1941 ; Microtus (Alexandromys) poljakovi Kastschenko 1901 ; Microtus (Alexandromys) xerophilus Skalon 1936 .

Distribution: Transbaikalia, Mongolia, and NE China (N Nei Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Subgenus Alexandromys , middendorffi species group ( Zagorodnyuk, 1990) or mongolicus species group ( Pavlinov and Rossolimo, 1998; Pavlinov et al., 1995 a). Meyer et al. (1996) placed M. mongolicus in the subgenus Microtus , and their integrated study of karyotypes, morphology, and hybridization reveals M. mongolicus to be closely related to M. fortis , by implication a member of the maximowiczii species group. Karyotypic analyses by Orlov et al. (1983), Yatsenko et al. (1980), and Radjabli et al. (1984) include phylogenetic inferences among Asian species of Microtus .
