Clavatula szontaghyi Strausz 1926 — Csepreghy-Meznerics 1969: 96.

Type material. Holotype: M.116, Bán , Baranya County ( Hungary), SL: 17.0 mm, MD: 6.7 mm, illustrated in Strausz (1926, fig. 2), stored in the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary (Budapest), figs 22E 1 –E 2.

Revised description. Shell medium-sized, moderately slender fusiform with conical spire; apical angle 38°. Protoconch and early teleoconch whorls not preserved. Spire whorls concave with narrow, indistinctly beaded subsutural cord, narrow suprasutural cord bearing low, wide-spaced tubercles largely covered by subsequent whorl. Shell surface covered by weak (poorly preserved) spiral cords. Last whorl ~60% of total height, subsutural collar narrow, bearing weak, horizontally-elongated tubercles, subsutural ramp distinctly concave, shoulder narrowly inflated bearing rounded tubercles, base very strongly constricted, peribasal cord present but weak (possibly worn), siphonal fasciole long, poorly delimited. Further moderately strong spirals over base and siphonal fasciole. Aperture narrowly pyriform. Outer lip not preserved, smooth within. Anal sinus wide, U-shaped, moderately deep, with apex mid-ramp. Siphonal canal long, narrow, straight (tip missing). Columella straight, slightly twisted at fasciole. Columellar and parietal callus thickened, sharply delimited, forming broad rim.

Discussion. This species is documented by a single poorly preserved specimen. Therefore, its status remains unclear and its placement in Megaclavatula is tentative. It is reminiscent of ‘ Clavatula orientoromana Báldi, 1960 in general outline, but is broader, lacks rounded beads and has a shorter spire. Megaclavatula ? szontaghyi differs from Megaclavatula laevigata ( Eichwald, 1830) by its conical spire and large rounded tubercles along the shoulder. Similarly, M. pilleri nov. sp. lacks tubercles along the shoulder.

Paleoenvironment. Unknown.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Pannonian Basin: Bán, Baranya County ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1926).
