Macropsis jozankeana ( Matsumura, 1912) View in CoL
Figs. 3–4, 22, 42–48
Pediopsis jozankeana Matsumura, 1912: 308 View in CoL .
Macropsis jozankeana, Metcalf, 1966: 90 View in CoL ; Anufriev, 1978: 27; Anufriev & Emelyanov, 1988: 86; Tishechkin, 1999: 77.
Description. Body (Figs. 3–4) bright-green or yellowish-green. Forewings transparent with green veins and usually with brown speckles more dense on claval veins and in apical parts. Ends of claval veins and apex of clavus as a rule marked with brown. Pronotum and scutellum with distinct longitudinal carina.
Male unknown.
Shape of 7th abdominal sternite (Figs. 42–45) in female somewhat varies in different specimens, with wide shallow depression in the middle of posterior margin. 2nd valvulae of ovipositor (Figs. 46–48) with 3–5 preapical teeth.
Body length (including tegmina): ♀, 5.0– 5.8 mm.
Nymph (Figs. 22) bright-green with sparse brown speckles, dorsal crest of abdomen with high wide teeth bent backwards. Body surface setae almost absent.
Host. In the Russian Far East this species was collected from Quercus dentata and, apparently, also dwells on Q. mongolica . It is usually found together with M. matsumurana .
Material examined. Southern and central parts of the Russian Maritime Territory, Kurile Islands (Kunashir). Many specimens, but only females and nymphs ( ZMMU).
Distribution. Russia (Southern and Central Russian Maritime Territory, northwards as far as Sikhote-Alin’ Nature Reserve, Terney Region; Kunashir), Japan (Hokkaido). Certain localities in the Southern Maritime Territory are situated at a distance of only 15–20 km from the boundary of China. Thus, the occurrence of this species in China is most probable.
Remarks. Identification of this species was based on the original description and investigation of photographs of a female from the type series.
This species differs from all other representatives of this group from China by the bright green coloration. Since males of this species are unknown, it would seem reasonable to suggest that M. matsumurana and M. jozankeana are two different colour forms of the same species. However, differences in nymph morphology including the density of surface setae indicate that these two forms are good species.
As observed under natural conditions in Khasan Region, Southern Maritime Territory ( Russia), the first adult specimens emerge in mid July. At this time only last instar nymphs and adult females were collected. Also, from 11 nymphs reared in the laboratory only females have emerged. Consequently, it may be suggested that in the Russian Far East this species is parthenogenetic.
