The Phlebotomus species studied
Eight of the potential European Leishmania vector sand fly species were involved in the study, namely: Phlebotomus (Larroussius) ariasi ( Tonnoir, 1921) , Phlebotomus major (Larroussius) subsp. neglectus ( Tonnoir, 1921) (hence: P. neglectus ), Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) papatasi ( Scopoli, 1786) , Phlebotomus (Larroussius) per fi liewi ( Parrot, 1930), Phlebotomus (Larroussius) perniciosus ( Newstead, 1911) , Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) sergenti ( Parrot, 1917) , Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) similis ( Perfiliev, 1963) and Phlebotomus (Larroussius) tobbi ( Adler and Theodor, 1930) . The occurrence data of the studied sand fly species was based on the Phlebotominae vector maps of V-BORNET of ECDC (2016). The mapped data were converted into presence/absence (binary) values. A total of 20 countries were involved in the study. Table 1 summarizes the vector status and European distribution of the studied sand fly vectors. The distribution data were used in the calculation of Jaccard indices, except for the states of the Caucasus and the oblasts of Russia.
