Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 4 m depth, by Dean Tully on 26 June 2013; another photographed at St. KVG18 (south side of Bauddisson Island , Kavieng District ) by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover , at 5–14 m depth, St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: KwaZulu-Natal ( South Africa) and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe and Austral islands. Found in lagoon and seaward coral or rocky reefs, territorial around prominent coral or rock formations called ‘cleaning stations’, 0–40 m depth. Marine.
