Rhizome small, inconspicuous, clothed with persistent fibrous leaf bases, sometimes bristly; roots numerous, swollen, fleshy, tuberous. usually stiff, not fetid. Flowers solitary or in small groups, terminal, pedicellate. Spathe valves 2–3, herbaceous with scariose margins at anthesis, ± keeled. Perigone in 2 rows, differing in size and shape, fused in a long, slender, cylindrical tube, somewhat widened at the apex; falls erect to erect-patent, obovate-cuneate to broadly lanceolate, sometimes with slightly undulate margin, reflexed in the upper part, gradually tapering into a short claw, with a prominent central undulate or irregularly fringed crest of a single row (rarely vestigial), usually with coloured fimbriae; standards erect to patent, narrowly oblong to elliptic, about equalling the length of falls, sometimes with slightly undulate margin, narrowed into a subcanaliculate, long haft. Stamen filaments free, adnate to the fall bases. Ovary trilocular, with axile placentation. Style filiform, with 3 petaloid branches, about half longer than falls, each one concealing a stamen; crests long, straight, broadly triangular, sometimes with fimbriate margins; stigma bilobed, with broad lobes. Capsule ellipsoid to ovoid, with 6 ribs, trigonous, dehiscing from apex to about middle, with sharp ribs, shortly pointed at the apex, not hidden into spathes; pericarp papery. Seeds numerous, oblong to pyriform, brownish, with a conspicuous whitish aril; testa surface wrinkled. p = 7 or 9. Figs. 3L View FIGURE 3 , 6O View FIGURE 6 , 13C View FIGURE 13 .
It includes at least 8 species occurring in the central parts of Asia, south of the main Himalayas ( Fig. 9D View FIGURE 9 ). A poorly known group, still in need of further studies. The noteworthy species Junopsis staintonii shows some morphological peculiarities allowing description of a new section, of which that species is the only known representative so far: Junopsis sect. Staintonia M.B.Crespo, Mart. -Azorín & Mavrodiev, sect. nov. Type (holotype):— J. staintonii (H.Hara) M.B.Crespo, Mart.
