Hypseloecus spinosus sp. nov.

( Figs 9, 10 View FIGURES 9 – 16 , 37–41 View FIGURES 37 – 41 , Table 1 View TABLE 1 )

Diagnosis. Recognized by deep red color of the body; male genitalia with strongly splayed out left paramere and presence of medial spine on the endosoma.

Description. Male. Elongate, parallel sided, more or less quadrate, lateral margins nearly straight; total length 2.41, width pronotum 1.82. COLORATION ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ): Body completely deep red, except for coxae pale white; membrane infuscate with veins pale; antennal segment I pale with variable red markings, segment II pale with apical third reddish brown, segments III and IV reddish brown; inner margins of eyes and vertex with pale white spots; meso- and metathorax with black patches; hind femur with white spots enclosing setae. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Dorsum with scattered or sparse silvery lanceolate sericeous scale-like setae, along with recumbent reclined black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with silvery white lanceolate scale-like setae. STRUCTURE: Head: Posterior margin of head including eyes concave, produced beyond anterior margin of pronotum, eyes not protuberant, occupying slightly more than half the head height in lateral view, antennae arising very close to eyes, on ventral margin of eyes laterally. Pronotum: Lateral margins weakly concave with single erect spine-like setae anteriorly, humeral angles rounded, posterior margin weakly concave; metathorasic scent gland evaporatory area prominent; mesoscutum exposed separated from scutellum by a transverse suture; scutellum flat. Hemelytra: Lateral margins straight, covering the abdomen; cuneus broadly triangular with a prominent cuneal incisures. Legs: Elongate femur cylindrical. GENITALIA ( Fig. 37–41 View FIGURES 37 – 41 ): Pygophore: Transverse, tapering and rounded distally. Endosoma: Elongate, tubular, J-shaped, apex membranous, lobe-like; secondary gonopore with semicircular opening, subtended by moderately long, erect glassy spicules; median spine present at mid-length, as a slender projection of moderate length. Phallotheca: Elongate, curved at middle, apex with two projections distally, ventral margin with a finger like projection and dorsal margin with short and rounded projection. Left paramere: Strongly splayed out; posterior processes curved ventrally, anterior processes splayed out and elevated. Right paramere: Short, flattened with curved outer margins.

Female. Fitting the description of the male ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ); total length 2.42–2.64, width pronotum 1.22–1.29.

Distribution. This species is widely distributed across Western Ghats of Karnataka, Coorg, Shimoga and Sirsi.

Host. Associated with a species of Dendrophthoe hemeparasitic on mango trees.

Etymology. Named for the presence of a medial spine on the endosoma.

Discussion. Hypseloecus spinosus on the basis of male genitalic character appears close to H. morobe (Schuh) and H. weirauchi Schuh and Menard but differs from both the species by the presence of the medial spine. Externally H. spinosus can be distinguished by deep red coloration whereas H. morobe is reddish brown and H. weirauchi is pale green to yellow green.
