Hypseloecus acutus sp. nov.

( Figs 1, 2 View FIGURES 1 – 8 , 17–21 View FIGURES 17 – 21 , Table 1 View TABLE 1 )

Diagnosis. Recognized by combination of brown and red coloration of the hemelytra, first segment of antenna brown; endosoma twisted at base, secondary gonopore with fringes of glassy spicules distad, apex flattened, broad.

Description. Male. Elongate, parallel sided, total length 2.09, width pronotum 1.39. COLORATION ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ): General coloration of body reddish brown; first segment of antenna and scutellum brown or black; pronotum dark brown with pale brown areas in middle; labium and cuneus reddish; cuneal incisures pale; scent gland evaporatory area pale white; membrane infuscate with veins pale, meso- and metapleuron red, with black spots; all coxa white, femur brown at base and apex, with red or pale patches medially. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Dorsum with scattered silvery lanceolate sericeous setae along with short reclinate black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with clumps of silvery white lanceolate scale-like setae. STRUCTURE: Head: Broad, with posterior margin concave including eyes, confined close to anterior margin of pronotum; vertex weakly carinate; eyes weakly protuberant, occupying 3/4th of the head height laterally, antennae close to eyes, inserted at ventral margins of eyes. Pronotum: Lateral margins weakly concave, with a single erect spine-like setae, humeral angles rounded, posterior margin nearly straight; mesoscutum exposed, separated from scutellum by a weak suture; scent gland evaporatory area prominent. Hemelytra: Lateral margins weakly concave, broader than abdomen; Legs: Hind femur swollen weakly. GENITALIA ( Figs 17–21 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ): Pygophore: rounded, tapering distally; opening small, rounded. Endosoma: Elongate, J-shaped, curved, tubular, with sides thickened, apical region distad of secondary gonophore weakly sclerotized and flattened, secondary gonophore semicircular, subtended by tuft of long glassy spicules, median spine absent. Phallotheca: Elongate, broader in middle, with apex slender and pointed, finger-like. Left paramere: Posterior process elongate curved towards apex, anterior processes short thumb-like. Right paramere: Short and broad, with apex rounded.

Female. Similar to male but more pale in colour ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); first and second segment of antenna pale, femur with red markings. 2.68, width pronotum 1.42.

Distribution. Know from the type locality Karnataka, north of Bangalore, Hessaraghatta

Host. Collected on Dendrophthoe sp.

Etymology. Named for its pointed phallotheca.

Discussion. On the basis of male genitalia, H. acutus is closely related to H. metamyemi S chuh & Menard, but differs by curved endosoma, fattened apex and left paramere with curved posterior processes. Externally H. acutus is distinguished by smaller size, dorsum reddish brown with pale brown areas on pronotum and pale cuneal incisures, whereas H. metamyemi is weakly orange or deep reddish brown and larger in size.
