Horaeomorphus calcarifer (Franz) View in CoL comb. n.
( Figs. 1–3, 6–8 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURES 7 – 8 )
Allohoraeomorphus calcarifer Franz, 1986a: 164 View in CoL .
Type material studied. Paratype: FIJI: 3, Viti Levu, Nandarivatu, 1000 m, 17 X 1977, leg. G. Kuschel ( NHMW).
Revised diagnosis. This species differs from all congeners in strongly convex pronotum and elytra; very dark brown pigmentation of pronotum and elytra and distinctly lighter head and appendages; distinctly darkened antennomeres III–VII; lack of lateral pits on frons; finely punctate head and pronotum, contrasting with large punctures on elytra; metatrochanters of males with pointed projection exceeding half length of femur; and central complex of aedeagus with distinct, basally located vesicular part.
Redescription. Body length 2.90 mm. Body of male ( Fig. 1) strongly convex; cuticle glossy; pronotum and elytra very dark brown, nearly pitchy-black, head slightly but distinctly lighter, appendages yet lighter, except for distinctly darkened antennomeres III–VI, maxillary palps light brown, nearly yellowish; vestiture moderately light brown.
Head broadest at small, finely faceted and moderately convex eyes, length 0.53 mm, width 0.63 mm; tempora in dorsal view arcuate, in lateral view twice as long as eye; vertex and frons confluent and convex, without lateral pits; supraantennal tubercles distinct but weakly raised; clypeus convex. Punctures on head dorsum barely noticeable at magnification 40 ×; setae sparse, long, suberect to erect. Antennae slender and only slightly thickening apically, length 1.45 mm, antennomeres I–VII distinctly elongate, VIII–IX about as long as broad, X slightly transverse, XI much longer than X but distinctly shorter than IX–X together.
Pronotum in dorsal view nearly circular, strongly and evenly convex, broadest slightly anterior to middle; length 1.00 mm, width 0.93 mm; anterior and lateral margins confluent and evenly rounded; hind angles strongly obtuse; posterior margin weakly arcuate; base with five distinct circular pits (largest median pit and two pairs of smaller lateral pits). Disc with sparse and fine punctures barely noticeable at magnification 40 ×; setae sparse, long, erect.
Elytra in lateral view slightly more convex than pronotum, in dorsal view equally broad as pronotum, broadest near anterior third; length 1.38 mm, width 1.00 mm, elytral index (length/width) 1.38; humeral calli absent. Punctures moderately large and shallow but well-visible at magnification 40 ×, separated by spaces equal to or slightly wider than puncture diameters; setae distinctly thicker and longer than those on pronotum, erect. Hind wings absent.
Legs long and slender; metatrochanters strongly modified, as in Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 .
Aedeagus ( Figs. 7, 8 View FIGURES 7 – 8 ) elongate, AeL 0.50 mm; endophallus in ventral view with large central complex of moderately darkly sclerotized structures, including basally located thick-walled vesicle and lateral pair of long sclerites; parameres slender, with several apical setae of various length.
Distribution. Fiji, Viti Levu Island.
