ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1878a: 163 (key), 164 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ In tota Italia et in Europa saltem australe … in Persia … in Africa australe et orientale [in all Italy and at least in southern Europa … Persia … southern and eastern Africa]”.
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype ( MSNG): Sezzé, 25.9.[18]67, P.M. F. / Hippobosca canina Rndn. / lectotype Hippobosca canina Rndn. , ♂, T. C. Maa, [19]62 / Hippobosca longipennis F. (= canina Rndn. ), ♂, T. C. Maa, [19]62.
PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 1 ♀ ( MSNG): Persia settent.e [northern Persia], 1862–63, Coll. G. Doria / Paratype Hippobosca canina Rndn. , ♀, T. C. Maa, [19]62; 1 ♀ ( MZUF: Box 66): Hippobosca / canina Rnd. , ♀ / 3413 / Paratype Hippobosca canina Rndn. , ♀, T. C. Maa, [19]62; 1 ♂, 1 ♀, 1 specimen (sex not determinable, missing abdomen) ( MZUF: Box 66): Hippobosca canina Rnd. / 3413 .
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Hippobosca longipennis Fabricius, 1805 View in CoL ( Hutson & Oldroyd 1980: 770, Soós & Hůrka 1986: 223).
REMARKS: Rondani (1878a: 164) described Hippobosca canina , without specifying the number of specimens, from material he had collected and also received from L. Bellardi and G. Doria . Guiglia (1957) did not list these specimens. Maa (1963: 22) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (1 ♀ in the MSNG; 1 ♂, 2 ♀♀, 1 specimen, sex not determinable, in the MZUF). Raineri & Rey (1996: 37) listed these specimens.
